The O 317 is a high-floor bus model from the Mercedes-Benz brand , which Daimler-Benz AG manufactured from 1957 to 1972 and as a floor assembly until 1976. According to the O 321 is the O 317 the second self-supporting bus model from Daimler-Benz, unlike the O 321 became the O 317 was designed as a pure city and intercity bus . Daimler-Benz only built solo buses ; external body construction companies such as Vetter or Gebr. Ludewig also built articulated buses , one - and -a-half- decker buses and double-decker buses .

Models

Three basic two-axle solo bus models of the O 317 were built: Two models with a length of 12 meters differing in terms of engine power, both of which have the designation O 317 and the model with a shortened wheelbase , the 11.2 meter long O, introduced in 1963 317 K . There are also the one and a half decker and articulated buses built by other companies and those buses with special bodies. The buses were available with different seat and door arrangements, there were two, three or four-part inner folding doors.

Time overview

  • 1957: Introduction of the O 317, length 12 m, antechamber - diesel engine OM 326, output 200 DIN PS (147 kW)
  • 1958: Extension of the model with 172 DIN HP (126.5 kW) engine output
  • Summer 1960: 192 DIN HP motor (141 kW) available on request
  • Summer 1961: first facelift, changes mainly to the front, roof edge pulled further down, arched windshield, side destination indicator on the rear or front doors. 172 HP engine withdrawn from the range
  • 1963: Introduction of the 11.2 m long model O 317 K with a shortened wheelbase
  • 1964: new direct injection engine OM 346 with either 185 or 210 DIN HP (136 or 154.5 kW), in addition to the two-leaf front door (735 mm clear width) also new three-leaf door with 1130 mm clear width on the O 317 K
  • 1966: second facelift, enlargement of the window areas and raised roof edges, second heat exchanger for the heating
  • 1972: Cessation of production for the models sold under the Mercedes-Benz brand
  • 1976: Final cessation of the production of floor assemblies for external body manufacturers

technical description

The O 317 is a two-axle forward control - solo bus in high-floor construction method. The body is welded to the floor pan and is self-supporting . The diesel engine is installed under the floor between the axles; External bodywork companies were able to attach a non-powered trailer to create an articulated bus with a drive on the middle axle, a so-called puller . The solo bus O. built by Daimler-Benz is described below 317 with technical status 1957 described.

The two axes of the bus are connected to rods guided rigid axles, which are cushioned with two front and rear with four air springs. Four telescopic shock absorbers are installed on both axles for damping . While the front axle has single tires, the rear axle has double tires. The size 11 tires eHD are mounted on tapered shoulder rims of dimensions 8–20. Braking is carried out with a Westinghouse brake from Daimler-Benz, which uses compressed air to act on brake drums with a diameter of 370 mm on all four wheels. The steering is a ZF hydraulic steering, the O 317 was only available as a left-hand drive.

The engine is the OM 326, a non-turbocharged inline six - four stroke - antechamber - diesel engine with water cooling and Overhead valves . The engine has a displacement of 10.8 liters and has an output of 200 DIN PS (147 kW). It is installed under the floor in front of the rear axle, and transmits its driving force via a single dry type Fichtel & Sachs G 70 KR to a synchronized mechanical multi-step transmission with four forward gears of the type Daimler-Benz G 32 / 70-4 . It's blocked with the engine. A Hydromedia three- speed converter transmission from ZF was also available on request . Only the rear wheels are driven.
