The Mercedes-Benz L 321 is a Mercedes-Benz truck that was built at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Mannheim from June 1957 , where the L 311 and L 312 trucks were also built. Compared to both, the L 321 is designed for a higher payload of initially 5.5 t. The L 321 was built as a flatbed truck, tipper truck and semitrailer tractor, both with a front-link cab and a hood -link design . The all-wheel drive models were only built as hood handlebars. Production ended in Mannheim in 1959.

technology

Chassis and power transmission

The L 321 is a truck with two axles and a modular ladder frame that was offered with wheelbases of 3200 mm, 3600 mm, 4200 mm and 4830 mm. Both the front and rear axles are rigid axles . They are suspended from semi-elliptical springs. The rear axle is also equipped with two progressive auxiliary springs, the front axle has telescopic shock absorbers as standard . The reinforced tires of size 8.25-20 eHD are mounted on split tapered shoulder rims of size 6.5-20. All-wheel drive vehicles have off-road tires the same size. The front axle has single tires, the rear axle has twin tires . All wheels have inner-shoe drum brakes that are hydraulically actuated with compressed air support (brake servo) . The vehicles, which were available in both right-hand and left-hand drive versions, have recirculating ball steering with an undivided tie rod from Mercedes-Benz.

The force is transferred from the engine, a single dry type Fichtel & Sachs H32 transmitted to the transmission. The gearbox, an in-house development by Mercedes-Benz , is interlocked with the engine and is a fully synchronized five-speed gearbox with ball shift. The drive power is transmitted from the gearbox to the bevel gear differential on the rear axle via a two-part cardan shaft; All-wheel drive vehicles also have a reduction gear. There was no differential lock for either the rear axle or the front axle.

engine

The engine is fitted to all vehicles of the Mercedes-Benz OM 321 , a standing series - six-cylinder - four stroke - diesel engine with two valves , indirect injection and water cooling . The cylinder block made of nickel-alloyed cast iron and the split crankcase are made from a single cast. With a cylinder bore of 95 mm and a piston stroke of 120 mm, the engine has a total displacement of 5103 cm³. The pistons are forged pistons made of light metal from Mahle , each with four compression rings and two oil control rings . The force is transmitted via diagonally split connecting rods with a double-T cross section to a forged crankshaft with seven bearings, hardened at the bearings. The connecting rod and crankshaft have lead bronze plain bearings with steel support shells. The crankshaft is equipped with counterweights and vibration dampers.

A camshaft with four bearings in plain bearings runs in the crankcase and is driven by the crankshaft via helical spur gears. It operates the vertically suspended valves via tappets , push rods and rocker arms . Each cylinder has an inlet and an outlet valve. The cast iron cylinder head, which covers all cylinders, is removable and has an asbestos-containing seal.

The pressure circulation lubrication works with a gear oil pump and an oil filter in the main flow. The oil is cooled by an oil cooler with a temperature controller. The fuel is cleaned through a felt tube filter and injected into the prechambers with a Bosch PES 6 A70 B 410 RS 64/7 injection pump through Bosch DNO SD 211 injection nozzles . The injection pump has a variable speed controller. The air is cleaned with a paper air filter. The engine is cooled with a tube cooler, the warm exhaust air of which is blown away by a fan.
