The Mercedes-Benz W 139 , called the 170 VL , was a bucket car for off-road use that Daimler-Benz developed in 1936 as the successor to the 170 VG .

Its wheelbase has been shortened by 75 mm compared to its predecessor and is therefore 2525 mm. The front section with the vertical radiator grille remained unchanged. The car also had the side-steered 1.7-liter four-cylinder in-line engine of the 170 V type with a compression ratio of 6.5: 1 and an output of 38 hp (28 kW) at 3400 rpm. The engine develops a maximum torque of 100  Nm (10.2 mkp) at a speed of 1800 rpm. An unsynchronized five-speed gearbox transmits the power to all four wheels, because the all-wheel drive could no longer be switched off, as with the predecessor. The four-speed transmission was also omitted. For this, the 170 VL had built - in all-wheel steering , whereby the steering for the rear axle can be switched off. The rear wheels hang on a coil-sprung swing axle . The front axle has two transverse leaf springs. All four wheels have hydraulic brakes.

The maximum speed of the vehicle is 82 km / h in normal operation. With all-wheel steering, only 30 km / h can be achieved.

The Wehrmacht received 42 cars, but again the interest was so low that no follow-up order was placed.
