The Mercedes-Benz C 215 is a luxury coupe that was sold under the name Mercedes-Benz CL-Class . The C 215 is based on the platform of the S-Class sedan (220 series) , but has its own body design . The same engines were also installed, but only the large-displacement petrol engines.
At the Geneva Motor Show in March 1999, the Mercedes-Benz C 215 series initially had its world premiere with the CL 500. Sales in Europe and Japan started in September 1999. At the beginning of 2000, the CL 600 with a twelve-cylinder engine was added.
By March 2006, 46,800 coupés of the C 215 series had been sold.
General
- Furnishing
Standard in the Mercedes coupe C 215, the came on a steel suspension -based active suspension Active Body Control (ABC) was used. The C 215 was thus the first passenger car from German production to be equipped with an active chassis. Apart from the CL, this technology is only available in the Mercedes S- and SL-Class. All other chassis (the so-called active chassis from Citroën or Dynamic Drive from BMW ( active stabilizers , Active Roll Stabilization (ARS))) are merely adaptive chassis. On the basis of sensor signals and with the help of special hydraulic cylinders on the axles, ABC almost completely compensates for body roll and pitch movements when starting, cornering and braking ( roll stabilization ). Complete compensation would also be technically possible, but is not used with regard to driver habits.
Standard equipment of the coupé was:
- Brake assistant BAS
- Bi-xenon headlights with cleaning system
- Parktronic ( parking aid )
- Multifunctional steering wheel
- Five-speed automatic with tapping gear
- Cruise control with the variable speed controller Speedtronic
- Automatic climate control with activated charcoal filter
- electrically adjustable leather seats with memory
For example, the following were optionally available:
- Electronic tire pressure control system
- Dynamic navigation system DynAPS
- Keyless Go (keyless entry and engine start)
- Active seat ventilation
- Multicontour seats with massage function
- Steering wheel heating
- Auxiliary heating
- Additional trunk lid protection
- TV
- CD changer
- Fixed telephone or mobile phone
- Voice control system
For the first time in a car, the buyer of a CL from the C 215 series was able to order natural stone trim parts for the interior from spring 2001. In a patent-protected process, wafer-thin granite slices (0.6 to 0.8 millimeters thick) are first produced, which are then specially shaped and applied to the center console, interior door panels, steering wheel rim and gear lever. The trim parts are available as part of the individualized designo range .
Facelift
In June 2002, a facelift brought the CL a modified front section with headlights in a modern clear glass look and revised front bumpers. The exterior mirror housings now contain ambient lighting that switches on automatically when the doors are opened or when the central locking is operated using the remote control and illuminates the floor next to the vehicle. The rear section with the taillights has also been revised.
The CL 600 and CL 55 AMG models received newly developed and significantly more powerful engines (see section Engines).
As part of the facelift, the safety equipment was even more sophisticated, including so-called up-front sensors in the front end of the body, which detect the severity of the impact early in a collision and thus trigger the front passenger airbag in two stages. The belt tensioners are activated even earlier by the sensors. Another new feature is the automatic two-stage weight classification of the front passenger with the help of a special film in the seat cushion. The right airbag is activated in two stages not only according to the severity of the accident, but also according to the passenger's weight .
Special models
In 1999, the CL 55 AMG F1 Limited Edition was built as a small series with only 55 units as a special model based on the CL 55 AMG. The 5.4-liter V8 engine with 265 kW (360 PS) was adopted unchanged. New was mainly the C-Brake -called carbon-ceramic -Bremsanlage which was first installed in a series production car from Mercedes-Benz. Other exclusive features were:
- Exclusive paintwork in brilliant silver, metallic.
- "F1 Limited Edition" lettering on the center console with consecutive serial number
- Illuminated door sills with "F1 Limited Edition" lettering.
- Shell-like front seats, black and silver leather cover and embroidered AMG emblem.
- AMG sports steering wheel with perforated leather, carbon inlays and automatic gear selector with leather and carbon.
Engines
Until the model update of the series in June 2002, the top model CL 600 had a 5.8 l lightweight twelve-cylinder engine with three-valve technology, dual ignition with AC voltage ignition system and ion current diagnosis, automatic cylinder deactivation (ZAS), which reduces fuel consumption in the partial load range , six catalytic converters and eight lambda sensors .
In the summer of 2002, the CL 600 model received a V12 engine with twin-turbo charging and a boost pressure of one bar, but without ZAS. Its power increased by 36 percent and its torque by 51 percent compared to its predecessor model. The CL 500 was equipped with the 5.0-liter V8 engine and could optionally be upgraded with automatic cylinder deactivation (ZAS) until 2002. The power transmission took place until 2003 via the 5-speed automatic transmission, which was replaced from 09/2003 by the 7-speed automatic transmission 7G-TRONIC for better acceleration, lower consumption and increased comfort.
The CL 55 AMG was offered until October 2002 with the 5.4 liter V8 with 265 kW (360 hp) familiar from the SL 55 AMG . The Evo variant with 308 kW (420 hp), which was only built for export (approx. 55 units), is very rare. From November 2002 this engine was equipped with a compressor . It developed the same performance as the twelve-cylinder engine offered at the same time in the CL 600 , but had significantly sportier characteristics. A five-speed automatic transmission with gearshift in the steering wheel underlines the sporty driving experience.
The CL 63 AMG was offered briefly from the end of 2001 to mid-2002 . It has a twelve-cylinder engine with a higher displacement from AMG and developing 326 kW (444 hp). After a short construction period, it was replaced by the more powerful V8 supercharger in the CL 55 AMG. The performance limit was raised again in autumn 2003 - with the CL 65 AMG , which mobilizes 450 kW (612 hp) and provides a torque of 1000 Nm between 2000 rpm and 4000 rpm.

Existence in Germany
Shown is the stock of Mercedes-Benz C 215 according to manufacturer (HSN), and type code numbers (TSN) in the Central Vehicle Register of the Federal Motor Vehicle Office . Types with less than 100 vehicles are not shown. Until 2007, the inventory included the number of vehicles registered as well as the number of temporary shutdowns. Since 2008, the inventory has only included "flowing traffic" including the seasonal license plates.
