The Mercedes-Benz Tourismo is a touring coach model from Daimler AG or its subsidiary EvoBus , which has been built since 1994. By 2014, 21,000 copies had already been produced.

history

As early as 1992, Mercedes offered the type O 340, a cheaper touring coach manufactured in Turkey , which was de facto a further development of the previous O 303 and looked similar to it. While the O 340 remained very rare in Germany, the model was mainly optically revised in 1994 and from that time onwards it was widely used under the name O 350 and the addition "Tourismo", which was also at the expense of the flagship O 404 . The Tourismo is the first Mercedes bus to have a name that doesn't just consist of numbers and individual letters. The O 350 also had independent suspension at the front and disc brakes all around. It was offered in two height variants as a high-decker (model designation RHD) and a super-high-decker (SHD).

While the Tourismo only received a facelift in 2000, in which the front and rear in particular were visually revised, a completely redesigned model was released at the IAA 2006, which was deliberately introduced as a cheaper alternative to the Travego . According to Daimler, the Travego is the S-Class among buses, while the Tourismo is the E-Class and thus the volume model. The Tourismo, which was new at the time, not only looked similar to the Travego, it also consists of a large number of identical components. While the Travego for the Western European market was built in Germany until 2017, the Tourismo came from the bus plant of Mercedes-Benz Türk.

The second-generation Tourismo was 3.62 meters high and was available as a high-decker in three length variants until 2017: 12.14 m (RHD) and 12.96 m (M / 2) as a two-axle vehicle and 12.96 m (M) and 13.99 m (L) as a three-axle vehicle. The higher SHD variant was no longer offered. Instead, a lower high-floor version was added in 2009 as the successor to the Integro H (Tourismo RH as a 12.14 m or RH M as a 12.98 m long two-axle vehicle). There was also a short version, the Tourismo K, also in raised floor format, which was introduced with the Euro VI standard. This bus is 10.32 meters long and reaches a height of 3.355 meters. It has a trunk volume of 4.2 cubic meters, which is achieved through a standard rear entry and thus a barrier-free toilet. According to Mercedes-Benz, the aim of this bus is to have as many purposes as possible, yet still be comfortable and have a small turning circle for mountain passes.

Tourismo today

The third generation of the Tourismo has been offered in RHD design since the end of 2017. The height was increased to 3.68 meters, the Cw value (wind resistance value) sank to 0.33. The bus is available in three lengths: 12.295 meters (without additions), 13.115 meters (M / 2 with two or M / 3 with 3 axles) and 13.935 meters (L). The appearance has been adapted so that it resembles the Actros truck at the front . The types RH and K will continue to be produced with the old look as follows. For the first time, the ABA 3 emergency brake assistant is available as an option; the AEBS, which is legally required, is installed as standard. Another novelty is the choice between two cockpits: The Cockpit Basic Plus is a standard offer, the higher quality Cockpit Comfort Plus can be ordered as an option . In the course of the third generation, the Travego model was discontinued because, unlike the new Tourismo, it does not meet the mandatory UN-ECE R66.02 overturning guideline (structural strength). As a result, the Tourismo has been expanded many times over in terms of options. As with the Travego, there is no longer a standard ignition key that is inserted under the steering column. Instead, an electronic ignition lock is now installed in both cockpits available, as is the case in all SETRA buses of the ComfortClass 500 and TopClass 500. In the Tourismo, this is installed on the left. It starts with the start / stop button. This button only works when the electronic ignition key is inserted. There is a choice of several Mercedes-Benz engines for the drive :

  • OM 936 , maximum output 260 kW, torque of 1400 Nm at 1200 rpm, available for the Tourismo and Tourismo M / 2
  • OM 470 , several variants:
    • Variant with maximum output of 265 kW, torque of 1700 Nm at 1100 rpm, available for the Tourismo and Tourismo M / 2
    • Variant with maximum output of 290 kW, torque of 1900 Nm at 1100 rpm, available for all variants
    • Variant with maximum output of 315 kW, torque of 2100 Nm at 1100 rpm, available for all variants
    • Variant with maximum output of 335 kW, torque of 2200 Nm at 1100 rpm, available for the Tourismo M / 3 and Tourismo L.

For the transmissions, the automated transmission GO 250-8 PowerShift with 8 gears and the two manual transmissions GO 210-6 and GO 190-6 are available. The latter can only be ordered with the Tourismo and Tourismo M / 2 variants. All three are produced in-house at Mercedes-Benz.
