The Mercedes-Benz W 121 was an upper middle class passenger car from Mercedes-Benz . It was derived from the Mercedes-Benz W 120 , the brand's first car with a self-supporting body , and was sold as the Mercedes 190 . To this day, the car is also known as the small pontoon Mercedes . The touring sports car Mercedes-Benz 190 SL (W 121 B II, from 1955) was derived from the 190 . The successor to the W 121 BI was the “Small Fintail” of the W 110 series presented in 1961 .
The 190 D, offered from 1958, was particularly popular as a taxi.
Model history
General
The body of the 190 presented in 1956 was identical to that of the 180 apart from a few details (trim, etc.). Instead of the side-controlled 52 HP engine, the car had a completely new engine with 75 HP (55 kW), which enabled a top speed of 140 km / h.
While there was only a four-door sedan from Mercedes-Benz itself, the bodybuilder Binz produced different body variants. Among other things , Binz built station wagons that were sold through Mercedes dealers. At that time, this type of vehicle was still largely unknown in Europe. The service vehicles from Mercedes-Benz were also based on this type. In order to circumvent an import restriction in South Africa , a pickup similar to the American Ford Ranchero was also built between 1956 and 1958 . Some of these right-hand drive vehicles were delivered complete, and some were finally assembled on site. The ambulances built by Binz had a slightly higher roof than the station wagon and a double door at the back. Other ambulances were built by the manufacturer Miesen , who, in contrast to Binz, also adjusted the height of the side windows to the greater height of the roof. Overall, emerged as 5667 "nerds", of which more than half of the 180 D .
Mercedes 190/190 D (1956–1959)
From May 1956, in addition to the Mercedes 180, a Mercedes 190 with a new, more powerful 1.9-liter engine with 75 hp and improved equipment was offered. The Mercedes 180 he differed outwardly by a larger Mercedes star on the hubcaps, a slightly wider grille, longer trim strips on the side fan slots a peripheral trim strip on the lower window side vent windows in the front doors and larger taillights. From August 1958, the Mercedes 190 was also offered as the 190 D with a new 1.9-liter diesel engine with 50 hp.
Mercedes 190 b / 190 Db (1959–1961)
For the IAA 1959 the pontoon four-cylinder were revised. They got a wide grille and the front bumper horns were omitted. The power of the gasoline engine was increased to 80 hp. Internally they got the letter b. In spring 1961 the Mercedes 190 was replaced by the successor model W 110.
