Binz was founded in 1936 as Lorcher Karosseriefabrik Binz & Co by Michael Binz in Lorch . They mainly built taxis , trucks and convertibles based on standard vehicles. The first ambulances have also been manufactured. In World War II truck cabs were and armored personnel carriers produced.

post war period

After the war, until 1955, the company truck cabs posed in today prevailing in Europe, but then little common design as Frontlenker ago. These trucks were mainly manufactured for Daimler-Benz , Krupp , Steyr and Gutbrod . During this time, the first taxis with modified bodies , extended limousines , roadsters , station wagons based on the Mercedes-Benz W186 ("Adenauer") and pick-up versions of the Mercedes-Benz W120 were produced. An ambulance based on the BMW 501 was added later. From 1954 Binz built scooters with 50 cm³ displacement, from 1956 with 150 cm³. In 1958, however, Binz stopped production.

In the 1960s, an ambulance based on the Mercedes-Benz W110 was offered for the first time with a wheelbase extended by 65 cm . In the following years, the vehicle range was expanded again and again. There were hearses , ambulances added to the military, and some patented equipment for emergency vehicles.

Turning time

After the fall of the Berlin Wall , BINZ Ambulance and Environmental Technology was founded as a further location in Ilmenau in 1991 . This was accompanied by the relocation of the production of time-consuming and wage-intensive products, such as emergency doctor vehicles and ambulances based on the VW T4 . In 1996 the ambulance with box body based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter was presented and the entire production of ambulance vehicles was relocated to Ilmenau. This year, BINZ Ambulance- und Umwelttechnik GmbH in Ilmenau also started production in the field of mobile hospitals, fire-fighting vehicles and special vehicles for authorities for security and disaster control. In Lorch, BINZ GmbH & Co. KG continued to manufacture hearse vehicles and car extensions.

In 2003 BINZ Ambulance and Environmental Technology presented a futuristically styled E-Class KTW of the new generation with a GRP body, type BINZ Ambulance 2003. This is the first ambulance vehicle body from German production with a complete body made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic, which was manufactured with Integrated Frame Technology .

BINZ Ambulance and Environmental Technology GmbH

In May 2012, BINZ-Ilmenau went bankrupt after a profit and loss transfer agreement had been prematurely terminated. The insolvency administrator sold the assets required for operations, which he had previously brought into a newly founded BINZ Ambulance- und Umwelttechnik GmbH, to the Thai RMA group. This sale led to the separation of the company's activities in Ilmenau and Lorch. While the "BINZ" brand was used in Ilmenau in blue and white, the "BINZ" logo in Lorch was only allowed to be marketed in gray.

The RMA Group sold BINZ Ambulance und Umwelttechnik GmbH, Ilmenau, in August 2015 to a German family office which, in addition to special vehicle construction, also operates companies in special machine construction. From 2015 to 2018, the annual turnover of BINZ Ilmenau rose from around 15 million to over 30 million euros and the number of employees grew by around 30% to 180. During this time, BINZ-Ilmenau developed new products and applied for several new patents.

Binz GmbH & Co. KG in Lorch, on the other hand, filed for insolvency on June 5, 2018 despite full order books due to insufficient liquidity. In January 2019 it was announced that the company would be liquidated.

The brand owner, who has been operating independently since 2012 - BINZ Ambulance- und Umwelttechnik GmbH in Ilmenau - has since acted solely on the market with the "BINZ" brand and continues the company's 80-year history in special vehicle construction.

In June 2020, after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany , BINZ presented a technical system that uses UV-C light-emitting diodes in the interior of an ambulance to kill well over 99% of germs, bacteria and viruses.
