The Mercedes-Benz W 246 is a compact van from the German automobile manufacturer Daimler , which is sold under the Mercedes-Benz brand . Production began on September 27, 2011 at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Rastatt and was launched across Europe on November 19, 2011. The van has also been manufactured in Kecskemét , Hungary, since 2012 . It represents the second generation of the B-Class and thus replaces the Mercedes-Benz T 245 . The W 246 was shown for the first time at the 64th IAA 2011 in Frankfurt.

The electric version of the B-Class (internal: W 242 ), called "Electric Drive", was produced since April 11, 2014 and offered in the USA. This was also available in Germany between November 2014 and August 2017.

The revised version of the B-Class was introduced on November 22, 2014. The successor model, the W 247 , was presented at the Paris Motor Show in October 2018 .

design

Exterior

The basic shape of the body was retained, but it has more beads and edges. The headlights at the front have been enlarged. They are now also available with light emitting diodes. The radiator grille is no longer optically integrated into the bonnet, but designed separately, reminiscent of the CLS (218 series) . In addition, LED daytime running light strips can be placed in the side inlets of the front apron if required. In the side view, the beads on the flanks that run towards each other towards the rear are noticeable. At the rear, the rear lights, also based on the CLS , are new. The fuel filler cap is now - atypically for Mercedes-Benz - on the left.

With the facelift at the end of 2014, the B-Class received slightly revised front and rear bumpers. Full LED headlights are now optionally available. The LED daytime running lights migrate from the side inlets of the front apron into the headlights.

interior

The interior has been changed a lot. The top version of the W 246 has the leather-covered three-spoke aluminum double-strut steering wheel from the CLS . The instrument cluster is also new, with a central 11.4 cm multifunction display and two analog round instruments, each of which contains a further small round instrument. A large decorative element is now attached to the instrument panel. The central display with a diagonal of 14.7 cm (from November 2014 optional 17.8 cm) in the base and 17.8 cm as standard when choosing the navigation system, which is located above the three aluminum ventilation nozzles, is now in the upper part of the instrument panel is integrated, similar to the SLS AMG . Equipment and packages

Standard equipment

The basic version of the B-Class has traction control (ASR), anti-lock braking system (ABS), brake assist (BAS), vehicle dynamics control (ESP), a six-speed manual transmission with eco start-stop function and shift point display, as well as power-assisted parameter steering. The weaker models B 180 and B 180 CDI have steel wheels in size 195/65 R 15 with wheel covers with ten holes; the other models roll on 205/55 R 16 wheels with the same hub caps. Safety equipment in the B-Class includes the collision warning system Collision Prevention Assist , the drowsiness warning system Attention Assist and seven airbags.

The B-Class has a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel that is adjustable both in height and in width, as well as three-point seat belts on all seats and a foldable rear bench. Furthermore, air conditioning comes as standard, heat-insulating basic glass, four-fold electric window lifters and the Audio 20 CD radio with CD player. The color display has a diagonal of 14.7 centimeters and a Bluetooth interface with hands-free function, an Aux-in connection (in the center console), a telephone keypad and six loudspeakers. The Audio 20 CD is operated via a controller on the center console. The basic model also has heated and electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, a heated rear window and LED daytime running lights.

Special equipment

Style

Compared to the basic model, models in the Style line have a radiator grille with two slats that are painted in iridium silver and have chrome inserts. The beltline trim strips in this equipment line are in chrome. An additional chrome trim strip is attached to the rear bumper. 10-spoke light alloy wheels in 16 inches are part of the standard specification. In addition, silver chrome is attached to various places such as the steering wheel, gear lever or ventilation nozzles.

Urban

Characteristics of the Urban equipment line are the twin-pipe exhaust system integrated in the bumper with trapezoidal stainless steel tailpipe trims, beltline trim strips in chrome, a double-louvred radiator grille in iridium silver and chrome, and 17-inch light-alloy wheels with five double spokes. The seat covers of this line are partly made of artificial leather, this line has a multifunction leather steering wheel and leather gear lever, a modified instrument cluster with silver-colored round instruments and red pointers. AMG Line

The highest equipment line , AMG Line, is characterized by AMG front, side and rear aprons, titanium-gray 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels with five double spokes , a double-lamella radiator grille painted in iridium silver and partly chrome-plated, a twin-pipe exhaust system with trapezoidal stainless steel tailpipe trims . In addition, a sports chassis with a lowered body and direct steering are installed here. The brake discs are perforated and the beltline trim strip is chrome. The seat covers in this line are partly made of synthetic leather and have red contrasting topstitching, the multifunction sports steering wheel is flattened at the bottom and, like the gear lever, is covered in leather and has red contrasting topstitching. The instrument cluster was changed with silver-colored round instruments and red pointers. Finally, the AMG Line includes sports pedals and red contrasting topstitching and silver chrome in various places.

Packages and special models

Chrome package (2011-2014)

The chrome package is characterized by a 3-lamellar radiator grille in brilliant silver with chrome applications, chrome applications on the bumpers, chrome-plated loading sill protection and daytime running lights with chrome ring and beltline trim strips in chrome. In the interior, the ventilation nozzles are in silver chrome, and the gear lever has applications in chrome. The controller has a silver chrome ring. The package also includes a second 12-volt socket in the rear and sun visors with illuminated mirrors. It is not available together with the Sports Package or the Night Package .

Night package

The Night package consists of a radiator grille with double slats in black with chrome trim, bumpers without chrome applications, roof trim in glossy black, darkened windows from the B-pillar and black-painted and gloss-turned 18-inch alloy wheels in size 225 / 40 with five double spokes. It is only available in conjunction with the sports package and bi-xenon headlights or the Intelligent Light System . The interior is similar to that of the sports package and the exterior mirrors are painted black.

Sports package (2011-2014)

The sports package features the chrome package , a double-lamella radiator grille in brilliant silver with chrome applications, modified bumpers, two oval tailpipe trims made of stainless steel and perforated brake discs at the front. Special characteristics of the sports package are the sports suspension with a selective damping system, optionally also a comfort suspension, as well as the direct steering and 17-inch light alloy wheels in size 225/45 with five spokes. Vehicles with this package have, among other things, partially leather-covered seats, decorative elements in a silver honeycomb look and a leather-covered gear lever. Various chrome applications are also used, as well as a leather-covered door center panel.

Exclusive package

The exclusive package stands out from the other models and packages with its standard leather seats as well as an instrument panel upholstered in artificial leather and decorative elements in brown root wood or black ash. Models with this package also have a leather-covered steering wheel fitted with a chrome clasp, a leather-covered selector lever with a chrome ring as well as seat heating and four-way lumbar adjustment for the front seats. It is only available in conjunction with the chrome package or the sports package .

Light and vision package

This package offers, among other things, the windscreen wiper with rain sensor, ambient lighting in the exterior mirrors, additional reading lights in the rear, sun visors with illuminated mirrors, front and rear footwell lighting and dimmable ambient lighting.

Edition 1 special model

For the market launch until the end of June 2012, the Edition 1 special model was available on request , which includes the sports package , bi-xenon headlights and tinted windows from the B-pillar. Until June 2012, it was supplied with leatherette-covered seats. On the technical side, a reversing camera and a cruise control with variable speed limit Speedtronic belong to the standard scope of this package.

Changes during the model years

For the 2013 model year (July 2012 to June 2013), the BlueEFFICIENCY badges were no longer on the front fenders. The telematics of the B-Class has been revised in line with the Mercedes-Benz model range, so that the display color has been changed from the previous beige color to silver. In addition, vehicles that are produced from this point in time will receive a modified speedometer, which now shows steps of ten up to 60 km / h and steps of twenty above (up to 260 km / h).

The 2014 model year brought some changes again: the B 220 4MATIC has been available since then . This is an expansion stage of the M 270 DE 20 AL with an output of 135 kW (184 hp) and all-wheel drive. The term BlueEFFICIENCY is also omitted . The 1.5-liter diesel engine from the OM 607 series is installed in the B 180 CDI with 6-speed manual transmission . The metallic paintwork canyon beige has been replaced by the northern light purple known from the CLA . Vehicles equipped with the Sports Package , the Exclusive Package or the Distronic Plus have since received a color display in the instrument cluster. The revised B-Class (“ Facelift ”) was launched on November 22, 2014 . The design has only been changed slightly, both inside and out. At the front there is a redesigned bumper that has larger side air intakes than the original model. The LED daytime running lights were moved from these to the headlights. The rear bumper has been modified slightly and the tailpipe trims are now integrated into it. The graphic of the rear lights has been changed slightly. All engines, except for the B 180 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Edition , have been converted to the Euro 6 emissions standard. The models B 200 CDI 4MATIC, B 220 CDI 4MATIC and B 250 4MATIC as well as the B 200 CDI with a displacement of 2.1 liters are new . The equipment program has been changed and adapted to that of the other compact models from Mercedes-Benz , so that there is now the Style , Urban and AMG Line in addition to the basic version . The light and sight package , the night package and the exclusive package are also available ; the chrome package and the sports package are omitted .

Technical specifications

Drive variants

Four engines were available for the market launch in November. These were two turbo-charged gasoline engines with direct injection and each 1.6 liters displacement and two 1.8 liter diesel engines with common rail direct injection of the third generation. The newly developed gasoline engines ( M 270 ) produce 90  kW in the B 180 and 115 kW in the B 200 . The diesels have an output of 80 kW in the B 180 CDI and 100 kW in the B 200 CDI . In September 2012, the engine range was expanded to include the B 250 with 155 kW ( M 270 , but with a displacement of 2.0 liters) and in December by the 2.1-liter B 220 CDI with 125 kW ( OM 651 ). A natural gas model came onto the market in early 2013. The B 200 Natural Gas Drive is based on the B 250 , but has been modified for natural gas operation. One large and two smaller natural gas tanks are located in the split double floor under the rear seat bench. Together they have a volume of 125 liters, which corresponds to around 21 kg of natural gas. The range is 500 km. A 12 liter petrol tank is installed for emergencies. Another variant of the four-cylinder M 270 gasoline engine appeared in June 2013 . The B 220 4MATIC has all-wheel drive as standard and an output of 135 kW (184 hp). From now on, all B 180 CDI equipped with the 6-speed manual transmission will be equipped with the 1.5-liter diesel engine from the OM 607 series . With the facelift, the B 200 CDI is getting a new model and thus 2.1 liter displacement. All other parameters remain the same. The all-wheel drive variants B 200 CDI 4MATIC , B 220 CDI 4MATIC and B 250 4MATIC are also new . With the B 180 BlueEFFICIENCY Edition , a fuel-saving variant of the B 180 will be launched in March 2015 . In this model, the body has been shaped more aerodynamically and lowered by 15 mm. Furthermore, the gearbox has a longer gear ratio in the upper gears.

The transversely installed gasoline engines with engine blocks and cylinder heads made of aluminum have two overhead, chain-driven camshafts. The direct injection system with spray-guided combustion has been further developed and is now being used in the third generation of the M 270 . The system pressure can reach up to 200 bar. In addition, the piezo injectors have been newly developed to enable up to five injections per work cycle for better mixture formation. Up to a speed of 200 km / h, the mixture does not have to be enriched to cool the cylinder head. A two-part water jacket and three-millimeter-thick cooling ducts between the spark plugs and injectors are used to cool the relevant engine parts. The engine's thermal management has been redesigned. After starting, no coolant flows through the engine in cold operation due to a switchable water pump, which means that the combustion chambers can be heated up more quickly. The electronic thermostat regulates the temperature of the coolant depending on the driving style and the ambient temperature. The short-stroke Otto engine with a stroke of 73.7 mm and a bore of 83.0 mm has a cylinder spacing of 90 mm.

In the case of the transversely installed diesel engines ( OM 651 ), the stroke was reduced from 99 to 83 mm and the displacement from 2.1 to only 1.8 l. Only the most powerful of the diesel engines had a displacement of 2.1 liters. In order to enable transverse installation in the B-Class , the belt drive of the auxiliary units, the turbocharger installation position and the air duct had to be changed. The cylinder distance is 94 mm and the camshafts are driven by spur gears. Longer connecting rods are used to reduce friction, which ensures lower lateral forces. In order to reduce friction, the two Lanchester balancer shafts have roller bearings instead of sliding bearings. A newly developed turbocharger with adjustable guide vanes in conjunction with an LSI manifold is used in the diesel engines. The mixture is formed via magnetic injectors in the central position of the combustion chamber. Furthermore, in order to increase the smoothness of the engine, the dual-mass flywheel was designed for high torques at low speeds.

B 250 e

In mid-2014, Mercedes launched the B-Class with an electric drive train. The modified front engine of the Tesla Model S was used through a cooperation . The liquid-cooled electric motor has a peak output of 132 kW and 340 Nm. Mercedes-Benz specifies the continuous output as 65 kW. The standard three-phase charger with 11 kW charges the traction battery with a net capacity of 28 kWh in around three hours. The range in the NEDC is around 200 km, in real terms more like 100 to 150. It can be increased by up to 30 km with an optionally available “RANGE PLUS package”, whereby more of the capacity (around 3 kWh) of the battery is used Usage is released. Unlike charging the Tesla Model S , neither a double on-board charger nor a fast charging option (supercharger) is available. The 345 mm long and 46 kg heavy three-shaft gearbox has a magnet on the selector shaft, which is detected by a Hall sensor so that the idle position is detected and the start-stop function is enabled. In order to encourage a speed-lowering driving style and to have enough tractive power when starting with a fully loaded vehicle and trailer up to a total weight of 3.4 tons, the spread, i.e. the distance between the lowest and the highest gear, is 6.7. The clutch is operated hydraulically and the gears are shifted using cables. The overhead output shaft with gears three and four as well as the reverse gear does not run in the oil, so that the drag torque is reduced, which is supposed to increase shifting comfort at low temperatures. At the same time, the first two gears have a triple-cone synchronization, the following gears have a double-cone synchronization. In order to reduce the shift forces, the cast aluminum shift forks are mounted on roller bearings on the shift rods.

The newly developed 7G-DCT seven-speed dual clutch transmission is also available on request . It is an automated three-shaft manual transmission made up of two sub-transmissions, each with its own clutch. Both the actuation of the clutch and the gear change are fully automatic and without interruption of the tractive effort. The spread is 7.99, so that a short gear ratio is possible when starting on a hill and the speed can still be reduced when driving at a higher speed. The dual clutch transmission achieves the efficiency of an ordinary manual transmission. The 367 mm long and 86 kg heavy 7G-DCT has two "wet" multi-plate clutches that run in an oil bath. The hydraulic oil is actively cooled, the filling quantity is six liters. The gearbox is supplied with oil via a mechanical and an electric oil pump, something that was previously not available in a double clutch gearbox. If the engine is switched off by the start / stop function, the oil pressure is maintained by the electric pump so that the transmission is immediately ready for operation when the engine is restarted, in order to avoid delays when starting. In addition, the mechanical pump can be supported by the electrical one during peak loads. The electrical control of the hydraulics for the parking lock, which is mechanically locked, is also new, so that the position of the gear selector lever could be selected and it is now on the right behind the steering wheel. The seven-speed dual clutch transmission offers the option of choosing between three shift programs: The Economy shift program shifts gears automatically and gear changes take place at low engine speeds, which means that gears are changed early. The second Sport program also switches automatically; here, however, the switching processes are shortened. Manual is available as a third switching program . Here the gears are changed manually using shift paddles on the steering column. With the first two shift programs, there is also the option of changing gears manually at any time. If there is no further manual intervention within the next ten seconds, the selected program will be switched back to.

steering

The second generation of the B-Class has electromechanical steering. The electric motor of the power assistance is attached to the steering gear; here energy is only required when steering is also used. In combination with the sports package , the electromechanical direct steering known from the CLS is used , the steering ratio of which is more direct via the steering angle; Here the steering gear and the servo motor are located in one unit on an integral carrier mounted in front of the wheel center axis. The use of electronic power steering enables various steering assistance functions triggered by the ESP control unit. When the car is oversteered, counter-impulses, when braking to µ-split steering corrections and the compensation of crosswinds and road inclination can take place. The most important innovation is this electromechanical steering, which enables the active parking assistant to be used. The turning circle is just under eleven meters.

landing gear

The front wheels are individually suspended on forged aluminum guide links and MacPherson struts , and a four-link axle is installed at the rear . With the four-link rear axle, three transverse links and one longitudinal link per wheel absorb the forces, so that longitudinal and transverse dynamics can be coordinated independently of one another. The wheel carrier and spring link are made of aluminum. This serves to reduce the unsprung masses. The so-called torque vectoring brake , a braking system that applies unilateral braking to the inside rear wheel to prevent understeer, is intended to support the driver.

Brakes

All B-Class models have disc brakes all around. Both the floating calipers on the rear axle and the brake booster are made of aluminum. For the first time in a vehicle of the compact class, there is the hold function , which makes it possible to take your foot off the brake pedal after a longer stop after pressing it down a little deeper than usual. When the vehicle starts again, the brake is automatically released. The B-Class is also equipped with an electric parking brake. Servomotors act on the floating calipers on the rear axle. This brake is operated via a button, so there is no hand brake lever. In the ADAC brake test, it achieved a top value with a braking distance of 33.6 m from 100 km / h.

body

The second generation of the B-Class was nine centimeters longer and one centimeter wider, but four centimeters flatter, with the aim of making the body more aerodynamic in order to make the vehicle more efficient. The drag coefficient ( ) is 0.26. In order to achieve such a value, the exterior mirror housings have been aerodynamically optimized and placed on thin bars. Furthermore, the entire area of ​​the front apron has been sealed; for example, special seals are applied to the headlights; and the spoiler edge at the stern is designed in such a way that it enables a defined stall. Another innovation are the wheel spoilers at the front and rear, which help the wind to better flow around the side of the wheel arch. In addition, the underbody is clad up to the rear wheel arch, followed by the rear axle support with its own cladding. The adjustable radiator shutter, which makes it possible to regulate the air flow through the cooling module of the engine or through the engine compartment, is already known from other models. As soon as no cooling is required, the blind is closed.

Originally, an eco-technology package was to appear a few months after the market launch , which included a lowered body, a joint seal on the rear window and the covering of chassis components on the rear axle. This would mean that the B-Class models had a drag coefficient of 0.24.

By enlarging the body, the knee room in the rear increased to almost 87 cm, which even exceeds the space available in the S-Class . The trunk has a normal capacity of 488 l; if the rear seat is moved forward, it is 666 l. If the rear seat is folded down, the W 246 has a maximum load volume of 1545 l.

safety

The new B-Class should take on the pioneering role in matters of safety. The W 246, for example, has the radar-based collision warning system Collision Prevention Assist , which warns the driver if the distance to the vehicle in front is too short and provides support in the event of subsequent braking, and the adaptive BAS Plus brake assistant as standard. This system first of all warns the driver visually and acoustically of obstacles and prepares the brake assistant for precise emergency braking. As soon as the driver presses the brake pedal, this is carried out and the driver is supported. The radar-based system detects too little distance to vehicles in front in the speed range between 7 and 250 km / h (between 30 and 250 km / h for vehicles produced up to May 2013), a decreasing distance and stationary obstacles. In addition, the braking force required to avoid a collision is calculated as soon as an impending collision risk is recognized. The system can also adapt to changes in the situation, so the braking force is lower as soon as the vehicle in front accelerates again; as the distance becomes even smaller, the braking force is increased. The preventive Pre-Safe system takes protective measures in the event of an impending accident. If an accident is imminent, seat belts are penalized, seats are put upright, the windows and sunroof are closed and the airbags are prepared to deploy. The distance control system Distronic Plus is optionally available.

Since the market launch in November 2011 to June 2012, around 70,000 vehicles have been delivered across Europe. A total of 92,440 units were delivered between January and August 2012. With 100,000 orders at the beginning of March 2012, the W 246 exceeded the expected demand, so production was expanded. In addition to Rastatt , the B-Class has also been built at the Hungarian plant in Kecskemét since March 29, 2012 . Furthermore, according to Mercedes-Benz, over 30% of customers come from third-party brands.

In the first full sales year of 2012, 145,649 units were sold worldwide, which is the highest value since the B-Class appeared in 2005. In Germany, 59,420 vehicles of the 246 series were newly registered during this same period , making it the largest number of new registrations in the entire van segment in 2012.

By the end of 2013, around 30% each had opted for the B 180 and B 180 CDI . Half of all vehicles delivered up to then had also been delivered with a navigation system.
