Life

Hedinger graduated from high school in Stuttgart in 1859. In the summer semester of 1859 he then began studying medicine at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . He also dealt with geology and paleontology . In 1864 Hedinger joined the Ghibellinia fraternity in Stuttgart . In the same year he was awarded the dissertation The development of the doctrine of pulmonary tuberculosis and tuberculosis from the earliest times to the present time when Carl von Liebermeister to Dr. med. PhD . He then worked for Adam Politzer in Vienna in 1865 . From 1866 to 1889 Hedinger practiced as a doctor in Stuttgart in his own private clinic, specializing in ear medicine.

After Hedinger left his medical practice on hold, it was the questions of geology and palaeontology that interested him, and as a student of Friedrich August von Quenstedt , his main endeavor was initially to collect as large a material as possible, which later became the basis of manifold scientific investigations. As one of the co-founders of the Württemberg Anthropological Association, he switched from geology to archeology, first of all to be practically active again through excavations and to collect material. Of particular importance was the excavation of the caves near Gutenberg on the Swabian Alb , which was carried out together with the Swabian Cave Association in 1890 , whereby a scientifically interesting Ice Age animal fauna was brought to light especially in the Heppenloch . In 1895 he published the results of geological investigations of prehistoric artifacts of the Swiss image - they appeared as a memorandum of the Swiss Friends of Nature Society . In 1903 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina Scholars' Academy (section for anthropology, ethnology and geography). Furthermore, he was a co-founder of the Association for Germanness Abroad .

He bequeathed all of his geological collections to the Natural History Cabinet , the Technical University in Stuttgart and the Natural History Museum Vienna . He sent the archaeological collections to the university collection in Tübingen .

Hedinger was married to Marie Renner, the daughter of the Württemberg Finance Minister Andreas von Renner .

Since 1876 August Hedinger was a member of the student union Landsmannschaft Scotland .
