The Mercedes-Benz B-Class (internally T 245, sometimes also referred to as W 245) is a compact van from the Mercedes-Benz brand , which, like the R-Class, was marketed as a sports tourer from mid-2005 to mid-2011 . The Mercedes-Benz W 242 / W 246 is the successor model.

history

The B-Class was presented at the Geneva Motor Show from March 3 to 13, 2005. Production started in April 2005; the official presentation date was June 4, 2005. According to the manufacturer, the B-Class combines the advantages of various vehicle concepts.

Facelift

On March 14, 2008, a revised version of the B-Class was presented at the Geneva Motor Show.

The modified vehicle came on the market in June 2008. The focus of this facelift were above all environmental compatibility, economy and comfort. The car can be recognized by a "two-part" bumper, similar to the E-Class (211 series) . The 500,000th B-Class was sold in June 2009.

For the particularly popular B 150 and B 170 models, Daimler has developed an automatic start-stop system that switches off the engine when there is a break at traffic lights. When you step on the clutch pedal, the engine starts again.

According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), 51,484 B-classes were registered in Germany in 2007, which corresponds to a market share of 24.0% in the mini-vans segment . This made the B-Class the most popular model series in its segment in Germany in 2007.

Between the market launch and the end of production of the T 245, more than 700,000 vehicles were delivered worldwide . The market with the highest volume, with a share of around a third, was the German market.

Production of the T 245 ended in June 2011, as the successor W 246 appeared in November .

construction

Like the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, the B-Class is built according to the sandwich concept and has front-wheel drive . The engine and transmission are partly located in front of and partly under the passenger cell, which saves space and ensures safety. In the event of a frontal collision, the engine and transmission are pushed under the passenger compartment. Despite its compact external dimensions with a length of 4.27 meters, the B-Class offers five seats or, with 2245 liters (with the passenger seat folded down), the space available for larger sedans and station wagons. Despite the smaller external dimensions, this volume is larger than, for example, the Opel Zafira and VW Touran .

Child seats can only be securely attached to the back seat on the outside seats. Isofix brackets are also available there. For an additional charge, there is an automatic child seat recognition for the front passenger seat that deactivates the front passenger airbag. However, this only works with baby seats that are available from Mercedes dealers.

alternative drives

From June 2008, the NGT model variant was offered as a standard natural gas vehicle. In addition to the normal 54 liter petrol tank, it has a 16 kg natural gas tank.

According to the manufacturer, the B-Class should continue to advance fuel cell technology as the successor to the F-Cell A-Class, but large-scale production with this model was not yet planned.

Engine variants

The B-Class was offered with six different four-cylinder engines. The engines with the designation CDI are diesel engines with common rail injection and turbocharger. The B 200 Turbo was built until October 31, 2010 because all cars built after January 1, 2011 must meet the Euro 5 emissions standard. The development effort that was carried out for the other engines has been saved here by taking this unit out of the program, as the market share of this engine was only slightly less than two percent. All other engines meet Euro 5.
