The Mercedes-Benz type 380 replaced the types 380 S and Mannheim 380 S in 1933 . The new car was given the internal type designation W 22. A total of 154 units were built by 1934.
The vehicle has a box-profile pressed steel low frame with a 3140 mm wheelbase and is therefore somewhat smaller overall than the Mannheim types. All wheels are individually suspended and have coil springs. The front suspension on two wishbones of unequal length was new at the time. A pendulum axle with two compensating springs is installed at the rear . The drum brakes on all wheels are operated hydraulically with suction air assistance. The model was available as a rolling chassis, a two-door touring car, a cabriolet in three versions (A, B and C), a sports roadster and a four-door sedan.
The eight-cylinder in-line engine was basically taken over from its predecessors, but now had overhead valves . The rear axle was driven via a three-speed transmission, the third gear of which was designed as an overdrive, and a cardan shaft. There were four different performance levels:
Daimler-Benz M 22 with or without a compressor
The displacement is 3823 cm³, the output 90 HP (66 kW) without a compressor . A built-on compressor was available as an option, increasing the output to 120 hp (88 kW). The maximum speed is 120 km / h without a compressor and 130 km / h with a compressor.
