successor Mercedes-Benz W 31

The three-axle Mercedes-Benz G 1 SUV was created at the request of the Reichswehr in 1926 . It had the internal type designation W 103.

The heavy car had two seats in the front and a tub in the rear of the vehicle with a central door in the back for a further six people.

It had a side-controlled six-cylinder in-line engine with a displacement of 3079 cc. The drive unit delivered 50 hp (37 kW). An unsynchronized five-speed gearbox transferred the power to all four rear wheels. These hung on two rigid axles with a distance of 950 to 985 mm, which were suspended on semi-elliptical leaf springs. The front axle was also rigid and had semi-elliptical springs. All six wheels had cable brakes. The maximum speed was 60 km / h.

Together with Daimler-Benz AG , Horch and Selve were also commissioned to build sample vehicles. All of these vehicles looked similar. The Reichswehr finally decided in favor of the Horch car (designed by Paul Daimler by the way). In 1926 only five off-road vehicles were built at Daimler-Benz and one more each in the following two years. Series production never came about.

It was not until 1934 that Daimler-Benz took up the idea of a heavy three-axle off-road vehicle with the G4 type .
