successor Mercedes-Benz C 257

The Mercedes-Benz 218 series is the name of the second generation of the CLS from the Mercedes-Benz brand . The model was offered in two versions as a “ four-door coupé ” and a five-door “ Shooting Brake ”. Both cars are based on the platform of the E-Class (212 series) and are located in the luxury class below the S-Class .

The four-door model (C 218) was sold on January 29, 2011. The car was shown for the first time at the Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris in 2010.

On October 6, 2012, the CLS was supplemented with a five-door so-called shooting brake , which is understood as a station wagon coupé. Internally, this model, unique in its class, is referred to as the X 218 .

In September 2014, both the CLS and the CLS Shooting Brake appeared in a revised form.

The starting price at market launch was 59,857 euros for the CLS 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and 61,761 euros for the corresponding model as a shooting brake .

design

Exterior

The design of the first generation was also retained in the second generation of the CLS . The 218 series, for example, has a long bonnet, narrow window graphics and frameless side windows. The roof is flattened as is typical of a coupé and the rear ends sloping slightly. The design of the front is based on the SLS AMG . The radiator grille is no longer optically integrated into the bonnet, but designed separately. The sideline is shaped on the one hand by the front structural edge above the fender sloping backwards and on the other hand by the curvature over the rear axle called the shoulder muscle by Mercedes-Benz. The transition to the rear is smooth thanks to the wide, almond-shaped rear lights. The stern is slightly arched and sloping slightly. In contrast to the Coupé, the Shooting Brake has a hatchback with a large tailgate.

With the facelift in September 2014, the exterior design was only slightly changed. From now on all models have a diamond grille and larger air inlets in the front bumper. The rear lights have been darkened slightly.

interior

In the interior, a high line runs in one sweep from the driver's door via the instrument panel to the front passenger door. The central display is now integrated in the upper part of the instrument panel. The second generation also has a new steering wheel; Another feature is the analog clock taken from the S-Class between the ventilation nozzles. The speedometer is part of the three deeply recessed round instruments. The central rotary and push button is important for the control. Large-scale decorative elements were harmoniously integrated into the overall design throughout the interior. The DIRECT SELECT lever on the right-hand side of the steering wheel column makes space for a larger storage compartment in the front center console. A total of five interior colors, including two-tone interior concepts, are available. The cockpit and the front seats are almost identical in the Coupé and Shooting Brake. The differences are particularly evident in the rear and in the cargo area. The Shooting Brake offers more space here and instead of a two-seater rear seat system as in the Coupé, three passengers can be accommodated in the rear. The trunk is - corresponding to the more voluminous rear section - significantly larger; the loading volume is between 590 and 1550 liters.

With the facelift, the interior was slightly revised. The new features include a modified steering wheel and a now free-standing eight-inch screen.

Innovations

LED high performance headlights

Mercedes CLS headlights with Intelligent Light System engraving
Luminous graphics of the LED headlights at night

The LED high-performance headlights , also known as full-LED headlights , are the first headlights in the world to offer all dynamic light functions using LED technology. A total of 71 light-emitting diodes are installed per headlight. This headlight contains the Intelligent Light System , which combines five light functions - "Country Road Light ", "Motorway Light ", "Extended Fog Light ", "Active Cornering Light " and "Cornering Light" - which are tailored to typical driving or weather conditions. In addition, the adaptive high beam assistant with its adaptive headlight range and soft light changes could also be implemented. These headlights were available on request until the facelift. Since then these have been installed as standard.

Multibeam LED

Under Multibeam LED means a new headlight technology, which is available on request with the facelift in September, 2014. A headlight consists of 36 high-resolution LED modules, 24 of which can be controlled separately, so that the lane can be illuminated completely automatically and with significantly improved light distribution and light range, without dazzling oncoming traffic. The headlights are controlled by a camera mounted behind the windshield. A total of four control units produce the light image 100 times per second. The active cornering lights can therefore work with foresight. What is new is the so-called roundabout light, which can use the data provided by the navigation device to recognize roundabouts and adjust the light cone accordingly.

Magic Sky Control

After the SLK ( R 172 ), it should be that of Mercedes-Benz called Magic Sky Control in the new CLS give. However, the decision was later withdrawn. This is a switchable glass roof that was previously only known from the Maybach . The difference to normal glass roofs is that the Magic Sky Control blocks the heat and rays of the sun from the interior; it can also be darkened or lightened in a variable manner. When the mode is switched on, the temperature on interior parts such as armrests is up to 10 degrees Celsius below the values with conventional green glass. The roof works through the physics of a plate capacitor: If an electrical voltage is applied to the glass structure, particles in the glass structure align themselves so that light can penetrate the pane. If, however, the voltage remains switched off, the particles remain randomly aligned. This partially blocks the light and the lens stays dark. Accordingly, the interior heats up less and the air conditioning is relieved when the roof is switched to dark.

On request, the top model is also available with the AMG Performance Package , which increases output to 409 kW (557 hp) and torque to 800 Nm. The CLS 350 BlueTEC has been available since January 2013, also in conjunction with 4MATIC on request . This is the previous 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine with a slightly reduced output to 185 kW (252 hp), which meets the Euro 6 emissions standard with the help of urea injection. From April 2013, the CLS 63 AMG will also be offered in a performance-enhanced version. From now on, the output is given as 410 kW (557 PS); 4MATIC is also available on request. As the new top model, Mercedes-Benz is offering the CLS 63 AMG 4MATIC S model , which has been increased in output to 430 kW (585 hp) and torque to 800 Nm.

With the facelift in September 2014, the CLS 350 will be discontinued and will be replaced by the CLS 400 , which has a double-charged 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine with direct injection and thus develops 245 kW (333 hp). In terms of diesel models, the CLS 250 is being converted to the BlueTEC system and, like all other engines, now meets the Euro 6 emissions standard. The CLS 250 BlueTEC is now also available as a 4MATIC model. The CLS 220 BlueTEC with an output of 125 kW (170 hp) will be launched below the previous entry-level model. In addition, the rear-wheel drive CLS 350 BlueTEC now delivers 190 kW (258 hp) instead of 185 kW (252 hp). The all-wheel drive model has an unchanged output of 185 kW (252 hp). The CLS 350 CDI is the facelift renamed "CLS 350d".

transmission

All models are powered by the rear wheels as standard and until the model update in September 2014 had the revised 7-speed automatic transmission 7G-Tronic Plus . A newly developed torque converter should give the 7-speed automatic a better response, an extended durability and reduce noise and vibrations. The latter is achieved through a revised hydraulic circuit, further developed dampers and a converter lock-up clutch that has a slip-reducing effect. The bearings and seals of the gearbox have been optimized with regard to better friction properties; in addition, a longer-lasting automatic transmission oil with a reduced viscosity is now used. The use of this oil results in significantly longer oil change intervals; this has increased from 50,000 kilometers in the previous model to 125,000 kilometers. The shifting processes should now take place quieter and faster due to the improved electro-hydraulic unit, friction-reducing materials and improved software.

With the facelift, which was introduced in September 2014, all models receive the new 9-speed automatic 9G-TRONIC . Only the 4MATIC models and the CLS 400 will continue to be delivered with the 7G-Tronic Plus .

In the CLS 63 AMG , the power is transmitted via the AMG Speedshift MCT 7-speed sports transmission, which is linked to an automatic start-stop system. A wet starting clutch running in an oil bath takes on the role of the torque converter. A two-stage torsional damper is used to reduce the vibrations. The gear housing is made of magnesium; the transmission in its entirety weighs around 80 kilograms. In addition, there are four different programs to choose from, which among other things shorten the shifting process and allow multiple downshifts. A Launch Control is available here.

steering

In the second generation of the CLS , a newly developed electromechanical direct steering is used for the first time. With this direct steering, the steering ratio of which becomes more direct via the steering angle, the steering gear and the servo motor are located in one unit on an integral carrier mounted in front of the wheel center axis. With the help of additional sensors and the control unit, the steering force to be applied is reduced. Active damping is also used in the steering. The electromechanical direct steering has the advantage that it is servo-assisted even when the engine is switched off and that there is now an automatic parking function. Even with a road sloping towards the bike, the driver should be relieved and thus supported. The steering also improves braking on µ-split, i.e. surfaces with different levels of grip, as the yaw moment is recognized and the driver is given an impulse to counter- steer by overriding a steering moment. This improves both the braking distance and the directional stability. The steering column can be adjusted 25 millimeters in height and 15 or 35 millimeters in length to the front and back.

The CLS 63 AMG has electromechanical sports parameter steering from AMG , which is linked to various modes that provide greater or lesser steering assistance at the push of a button.

landing gear

When steel chassis with an amplitude-dependent damping system which ensures the that shock absorber the respective driving situation to adjust by the damping forces are automatically reduced or increased, the front one is three-beam axle with MacPherson struts installed behind a multi-link axle . In the link plane of the spring legs are for a rebound and cross brace that the roll center increased to 90 millimeters, the other a tie rod of the steering rack . In addition, a stabilizer is connected to the suspension strut, which guides the front wheel, among other things, and which is made up of cylindrical, lateral force-compensating coil springs, twin-tube shock absorbers and three-phase head bearings. The rear axle is suspended from a subframe . To increase comfort, an additional support is used for the front subframe mounting, which increases the rigidity of the introduction. On the rear axle, the suspension struts consist of cylindrical, transverse force-compensating coil springs, single-tube shock absorbers and three-phase head bearings.

The Airmatic two-chamber air suspension, which is available as an option and comes as standard on the CLS 500, is connected to a continuously variable, electronically controlled damping system that regulates each wheel individually. Seven sensors collect information about the current driving situation and the state of the body. This sets the optimum shock absorber characteristics. The system determines the damping force for each wheel individually. The air suspension includes automatic height adjustment, which ensures that the vehicle does not lower when it is loaded. At higher speeds, the vehicle height is automatically reduced in order to reduce fuel consumption and increase driving safety. On bad roads or on high driveways, the vehicle level can also be increased at the push of a button. Compared to the first generation of the CLS , the dynamic lift on the rear axle has been minimized, resulting in greater braking stability.

In the top model, the CLS 63 AMG , steel suspension is used on the front axle, but air suspension is used on the rear axle. This has the advantage that the rear vehicle height is always the same. A three-link front axle with an enlarged track width of 1623 millimeters serves as the front wheel suspension. The wheel carriers also have a larger negative camber. The AMG Ride Control sports suspension is equipped with an electronically controlled damping system that works with the help of four sensors that monitor the acceleration and braking phases as well as the steering angle and lateral acceleration, and with the help of four sensors that take care of the vehicle height and another three sensors that take care of the body movements, which continuously varies the load status of the vehicle depending on the situation and speed, for example to reduce the body's rolling.

Brakes

Internally ventilated, perforated brake discs with a diameter of up to 360 millimeters work on the front axle and the internally ventilated brake discs on the rear axle have a diameter of up to 320 millimeters on the four-cylinder diesel models - depending on the engine. In order to accelerate the cooling process of the brakes, two-part cover plates were developed that guide the air from the underbody over the wheelhouses to the brakes. In the four- and six-cylinder engines, floating callipers with a brake caliper housing made of aluminum are installed on the front axle , while the eight-cylinder models have fixed calipers with a brake caliper housing made of aluminum. At the rear, all models use floating calipers with a brake caliper housing made of aluminum. The braking system has a dry braking function.

The braking system of the CLS 63 AMG consists of internally ventilated, perforated brake discs with a diameter of 360 millimeters installed on both axles. The front panels, which are exposed to higher loads, are constructed using composite technology. An AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system with ceramic brake discs with a diameter of 402 millimeters at the front and 360 millimeters at the rear is also available as an option for this model . This brake system has a weight that is 40 percent lower than that of the system installed as standard in this model.

body

Around 70 percent of the bodyshell consists of high-strength and ultra-high-strength steel alloys. The four-part front wall offers four impact levels. The upper side member level is made up of the profile sheets above the wheel arches. The middle impact zone consists of an aluminum cross member and side members, which are connected to the floor side members extending to the rear cross member, which can split forces. The integral support on which the engine, steering and front axle are attached also serves as a plane. The extended side skirts also prevent the wheel from entering the interior. In the underbody there are tunnel struts that reinforce the body floor and transfer forces to the side facing away from the impact in the event of a side impact. The rear structure consists of multi-part longitudinal members held in a closed box profile, which have a graduated material thickness, and a bending cross member, in which the material thickness is higher on the outer sides, which are significantly more stressed in an accident, than on the inside. With the aim of reducing weight and thus optimizing consumption, the doors are now made entirely of aluminum; just like the bonnet, the front fenders, the trunk lid, the parcel shelf, the support profiles, essential parts of the chassis and the engines. Although the CLS has grown in width and thus has a larger frontal area, air resistance has been reduced by around 10 percent. A cooling air louvre and aerodynamically optimized tires also help to reduce the value to 0.26. This corresponds to an improvement of 13 percent compared to the first CLS . An exterior mirror that has been optimized in terms of aerodynamics and aeroacoustics is now on the door flank. Engine compartment and main floor panels are installed on the underbody and wheel spoilers are used. In order to reduce wind noise, the joint seals between the bonnet and the radiator grille and on the exterior mirror between the mirror head and the mirror base have been improved. A wind deflector was also installed on the sunroof. The doors are now more rigid and different damping means are used. The rainwater is drawn off at the rear through two channels, which are located on the left and right of the rear window.

bikes

All models with four and six cylinders have 17-inch tires in size 245/45 ex-works, the CLS 500 rolls on 18-inch tires in size 255/40 as standard, which are also available for the weaker models on request. In addition, 18-inch wheels in 255/40 at the front and 285/35 as well as 19-inch wheels in 255/35 and 285/30 at the rear are also available for all models. The CLS 63 AMG has 19-inch tires of size 255/35 at the front and 285/30 at the rear as standard.

safety

Nine airbags ensure safety , including adaptive airbags for the driver and front passenger, a knee airbag for the driver, two side airbags in the front seat backs , which are also available for the rear seats at an additional cost, and two window airbags that cover the entire window area and pelvic bags protecting the pelvic area for the front passengers. The belts are all three-point automatic belts with belt tensioners and belt force limiters . The second generation of the CLS also has crash-responsive headrests that protect the cervical spine in the event of a rear-end collision by supporting the heads earlier by moving these headrests 40 millimeters forwards and 30 millimeters backwards. The standard pre-safe system takes protective measures in the event of an impending accident. If an accident is imminent, seat belts are tightened, seats are put upright, the windows and sunroof are closed and the airbags are prepared to deploy. Pre-Safe also works together with the Brake Assist and ESP , so that if the driver does not react, fully automatic emergency braking can be initiated. The safety equipment also includes the drowsiness detection "Attention Assist" (standard equipment), lane departure warning , blind spot assistant , speed limit assistant with traffic sign recognition , night vision assistant plus with infrared camera as well as the distance control system Distronic Plus and numerous other safety systems.

Awards

At the beginning of 2011, the CLS received the environmental certificate from TÜV Süd, which certifies that this car has less of an impact on the environment than comparable products over its entire life cycle - from manufacture to daily use to recycling. This means that around 30 percent less CO 2 emissions are emitted than the previous model. 40,000 individual processes were used to determine this balance; The result of this was the eco-profile. All environmentally relevant processes from development through production and use to recycling were examined. For example, a large number of recycled components and natural materials made from renewable raw materials are built into the CLS . In addition, the CLS 2011 fulfills the recycling quota of 95 percent by weight required from January 1, 2015.

paragraph

In the first year, 2011, 32,533 vehicles were sold. In the following year, 2012, 36,825 vehicles were delivered worldwide.

outlook

It is forecast that Europe will be the CLS's largest market . 46 percent of the vehicles sold worldwide, i.e. every second CLS , are to be sold there. The launch on the North American market took place in May of the same year.
