The Mercedes-Benz W 01 was supposed to as a 5/25 hp model , together with the other two Porsche -structures, the 2-liter Type W 02 and the 3-liter Type W 03 to Berlin Motor Show in October 1926 are presented . The six-cylinder engine, which was initially designed, was rated by management as not very promising and the presentation was initially postponed.

A total of 8 prototypes of the car were made, some as 2-door touring cars, some as 2-door sedans. Its side-controlled six-cylinder in-line engine with a capacity of 1392 cm³ developed 25 hp (18.4 kW) and accelerated the vehicle to up to 88 km / h. The rear wheels, which were attached to a rigid axle and suspended from semi-elliptic leaf springs, were driven via a three-speed gearbox. The front axle was also rigid and hung on semi-elliptical leaf springs. The car was equipped with cable brakes for all 4 wheels.

With the six-cylinder engine, which is much too expensive in this car class, Ferdinand Porsche picked up the first ruffle from the management. They called for the installation of a cheaper engine.

As a result, Mercedes decided not to build this car and made a new attempt to gain a foothold in the compact class with the W 23 in 1934 .
