The SsangYong Istana (Korean: 쌍용 이스타나) is the first minibus of SsangYong . It was manufactured by SsangYong in Seoul , South Korea , from 1995 to 2003 . The vehicle with two seats as a delivery van and nine to 15 seats as a minibus was based on the Mercedes-Benz MB 100 . The designs corresponded to those of the Mercedes-Benz MB 100. A 70 kW 2.9 liter diesel engine served as the drive. The Istana was manufactured as a left-hand drive as well as a right-hand drive.
Primarily intended for the domestic South Korean market, the car was also sold in Asia as the Daewoo Istana and under license under the brand name Mercedes-Benz as the MB100 / MB140 with gasoline engines and as the MB100D / MB140D with diesel engines. In Russia, the istana was often used as a marshrutka or in long-distance traffic in eastern Siberia and the Far East .
After production was discontinued, the production facilities went to China to the then second-largest Ssangyong shareholder Shanghai Automotive Industry , where the Korean MB 100/140 version Istana is still being produced. However, no longer under the brand names Mercedes-Benz or Ssangyong, but as SHAC Istana.
