In the summer of 2003, the Rexton was introduced in Europe. Technically, it is based on the slightly elongated chassis of the SsangYong Musso with a ladder frame . Initially, two engines were available: a 2.9-liter five-cylinder diesel with 95 hp and a 220 hp 3.2-liter petrol engine. Both engines were based on Mercedes-Benz designs and they were also available in the Musso. The diesel engine was derived from the Mercedes-Benz OM602 , which was used in various models by Mercedes. It had five cylinders and originally the pre-chamber injection typical of Mercedes . A turbodiesel variant developed by SsangYong developed 88 kW (120 PS) instead of 70 kW (95 PS). It also still had antechamber injection; but it was not the same as the turbodiesel version OM 602 LA with direct injection developed by Mercedes on the same basis . The gasoline engine was a Mercedes-Benz M 104 with six cylinders in line and four valves per cylinder. It was used in various Mercedes-Benz cars (E-, S-, G-Class) and replaced there in 1997 by the V-6 engine M 112 . SsangYong installed the engine in all series: in the Musso, Korando, Rexton - and also in the limousine Chairman. After the bankruptcy of the first importer, the 1st generation Rexton was marketed briefly in Europe as the Daewoo Rexton with the Daewoo logo on the bonnet.

In the diesel version, the power is transmitted either by a five-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic . The manual transmission comes from the Mexican manufacturer Tremec, the automatic from the Australian supplier BTR Automotive . The gasoline engine was only available with the automatic.

The all-wheel drive has a transfer case from BorgWarner . The diesel engine was connected to a simple all-wheel drive in which the front wheels could be rigidly engaged; in road use the Rexton drove with rear-wheel drive . The gasoline engine included a permanent all-wheel drive that could also be used on the road. It was the "TOD system" (Torque On Demand), which was also used in numerous US SUVs as well as Isuzu . Here, an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch distributes part of the drive torque to the front wheels depending on the slip on the wheels.

In 2004 the model was revised for the first time; the new models were available in Germany from autumn. Only minor changes were made to the body. A new diesel engine was now optionally available. The 2.7-liter five-cylinder was based on the previous 2.9-liter engine block of the OM602, but received a reduced cylinder bore, which reduced the displacement to 2696 cm³, and a new cylinder head with four valves per cylinder and common rail - Direct injection . This engine was not the same as the Mercedes 2.7 liter common rail turbodiesel with the designation OM612, which at first glance looked similar, but was developed by SsangYong. This engine was optionally combined with an electronically controlled five-speed automatic transmission that had previously also been used at Mercedes-Benz. For the first time, ESP was also available, which defused the handling characteristics described as critical. The previous 2.9-liter diesel versions continued to be offered in parallel, as was the 3.2-liter gasoline engine.

Rexton (2006-2012)

In summer 2006, the facelifted Rexton appeared in Europe (in South Korea on March 28, 2006). The new, square radiator grille cited appropriate stylistic elements from Mercedes-Benz; the other changes were less noticeable. The fog lights were smaller, the trim strips on the side skirts were omitted. The 270 XDi had been redesigned and developed 137 kW (186 PS), recognizable by the 270 XVT abbreviation. New injectors, modified engine electronics, a new variable turbocharger and a larger charge air cooler were installed. The variant with 120 kW (163 hp) remained on offer. In Germany, the gasoline engine, the 2.9 L turbodiesel engine and the permanently usable all-wheel drive have been removed from the range. According to the importer, the reason for this was delivery problems due to repeated strikes in South Korea.

Rexton W (2012-2017)

In the summer of 2012, the Rexton was revised again. In Europe, the model is in the early summer 2013 under the name Rexton W entered the market. The front of the new model has been heavily redesigned, with the radiator grille previously based on Mercedes being replaced by an independent element. In addition, the headlights, front apron, rear lights, bumpers and the tailgate have been redesigned. The Rexton W is powered in this country by a 2-liter turbodiesel with 114 kW (155 PS) since 2015 by a 2.2 diesel with 131 kW (178 PS). In Russia the old Mercedes-Benz diesel engines with 2.7 liters are still offered and in Korea the old 3.2-liter machine is also offered as a motorization.

The second generation of the Rexton (internal: Y400) was presented on March 30, 2017 as part of the Seoul Motorshow . In Europe, the vehicle made its debut in September 2017 at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main . In Germany, the first vehicles were delivered in mid-November 2017. In spring 2020 the series was visually revised.

The transmission (7G-Tronic) was designed by Mercedes and is manufactured under license by SsangYong. The engine is an in-house development.

The body of the 2nd generation Ssangyong Rexton sits - like that of its predecessor - on a ladder frame, which contributes to the comparatively high trailer load of 3.5 t, but also increases the vehicle weight.

The rear wheels are driven as standard; Most vehicles, however, are likely to have all-wheel drive installed, some of which are subject to a surcharge. It is switchable and can be combined with an additional reduction. A differential lock - as in the sister model, the Musso - is not available on the Rexton. This is due to the uses of the Rexton (towing trailers and only light off-road use), since a differential lock is not necessary and would be associated with additional costs.

The vehicle has been sold on the Indian market as the Mahindra Alturas G4 since November 2018 . There it is positioned above the Mahindra XUV 500 .

The SsangYong Musso pick-up presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2018 is based on the second generation Rexton.
