The Italdesign Giugiaro SpA (often only Italdesign is called) a design studio for various automotive brands, which for Audi AG belongs. The company designs the bodies , develops the interior vehicle architectures and implements them through to production planning, but does not build them itself.

history

The company was founded by industrial designer Giorgio Giugiaro and engineer Aldo Mantovani. Giugiaro had been head of design at the Turin-based coachbuilder Bertone from 1959 and had held the same position at Ghia from 1965 . At the beginning of 1967 Giugiaro went into business for himself with the design studio Ital Styling , but was in fact still closely linked to Ghia because he did most of the design jobs as a subcontractor for Ghia. Since the second half of 1967 Giugiaro has been keen to offer not only services in the area of design, but also more extensive construction work. The reason for this was Giugiaro's emerging involvement in the development of the Alfasud compact car . To ensure the necessary technical know-how, Giugiaro connected with Aldo Mantovani, who had been production manager at Fiat for 20 years. Together they founded the company SIRP (Stidi Italiani Realizzazione Prototipi SpA) in February 1968, which renamed Ital Design that same year and exhibited its first show car at the 1968 Turin Motor Show, the Bizzarrini Manta .

Italdesign became one of the world's leading design studios in the 1970s. It was last managed in the second generation of the family by Giorgio Giugiaro's son Fabrizio .

On May 25, 2010 Volkswagen AG took over a total of 90.1% of the shares in Italdesign through the Audi subsidiary Lamborghini , the remaining shares remained in the possession of the Giugiaro family. In June 2015, Audi also took over the remaining shares.

In 2015, Giorgio and Fabrizio Giugiaro founded the GFG Progetti design studio in Turin , which primarily develops design concepts for electric vehicles on behalf of Chinese companies.

Automotive design

The production vehicles designed by Giugiaro include:

He also designed the Volkswagen with the new design of the 70s:

The VW Tarek rally sports car , which took part in the Paris-Dakar rally in 2003 , was also given a body made by Italdesign.

At the 87th Geneva Motor Show 2017, the Italdesign Zerouno, a sports car limited to five copies, was presented. The 4847 mm long Zerouno has the 5.2 liter naturally aspirated V10 engine known from the Lamborghini Huracán , which accelerates the sports car to 100 km / h in 3.2 seconds. The Zerouno reaches a maximum of 330 km / h. The Roadster version Duerta presented Italdesign on the 88th Geneva Motor Show in March 2018. It too is limited to five copies.
