VW Tarek at the Dakar 2005

The Volkswagen Tarek is a two-wheel driven rally - sports cars of the Volkswagen Racing GmbH , which the public was presented at the Essen Motor Show in 2002 and 2003 his debut in the Dakar Rally celebrated (three driver teams). With this prototype, which was developed in a very short time and under the technical direction of Motorsport Director Rudolf-Helmut Strozyk, Volkswagen pursued the goal of gaining experience in this rally segment in order to later contest this rally with the Race Touareg . The racing driver and so far the only Dakar winner Jutta Kleinschmidt was hired to drive the VW Tarek .

The design of this vehicle came from Italdesign . Thanks to the extremely lightweight construction, a weight advantage of around 500 kg was achieved over the competition. Nevertheless, the relatively weak engine had a speed disadvantage of approx. 20 km / h. This disadvantage weighed heavily on the long and fast desert stages, so that it was not enough for an overall victory.

After using the Race Touareg in 2004, the Tarek models were sold to a private team in Belgium. Today the vehicles are driven by the former works driver Stéphane Henrard .
