The company was founded in 1976, initially in the legal form of a limited partnership , as a pure assembly company for exhaust systems. In 1982 a three-way catalytic converter for gasoline engines was developed. Catalytic converters have been manufactured in-house since 1985, and the development of control technology for diesel engine exhaust gases began in 1992. In 1995, in cooperation with the British company Johnson Matthey , the CRT filter system (Continuously Regenerating Trap) for cleaning diesel exhaust in particle filters introduced and the development of SCR technology (Selective Catalytic Reduction Technology; reducing nitrogen oxides by ammonium carbamate addition was) began. In 1996 the retrofit catalytic converter KAT-2000 was presented. In 1997 two subsidiaries were founded in Port Elizabeth (South Africa). In 1998, HJS took over the Donzdorf muffler manufacturer Schmid and presented the SCRT system for diesel engines, which combined particle filters and SCR denitrification (patented in 2001 together with Johnson Matthey). 1999 regulated retrofit catalysts (TWC) was introduced into China, the following year with DaimlerChrysler , the joint venture PUREM established for the development of exhaust systems for diesel trucks. In 2001, HJS and Johnson Matthey jointly patent the SCRT system. In 2002 HJS was able to present a newly developed sintered metal diesel particle filter (“JET filter”) to the public, from which Bosch acquired a production license for the passenger car sector in the same year . In 2003, HJS sold its stake in the PUREM joint venture to DaimlerChrysler. In 2005, the subsidiary DES GmbH was founded as a full-service supplier for diesel exhaust aftertreatment systems in the commercial vehicle and off-road sectors . DES GmbH and Mann + Hummel GmbH have had a sales cooperation for non-road applications in international markets since 2006 . In 2008, HJS patented the self-sufficient exhaust gas treatment for mobile machines and stationary applications.
