The M 104 is a six-cylinder in - line engine from Daimler-Benz with a displacement of 2.8 to 3.6 liters . The Otto engine went into production in 1989 initially with KE-Jetronik as the successor to the M 103 (2.6 or 3 liters) and differs from it mainly through a new cylinder head with four-valve technology (24V). The M 104 was used in the passenger car series 124 and 210 (E-Class), 140 (S-Class), R 129 (SL-Class) and 202 (C-Class).

In certain models (W124 4MATIC and SL R129) the M 103 has been further developed and only given an M 104 engine number; the difference is known from the spare part number: 103 011 10 01 cast into the engine block.

The six-cylinder V-engine M 112 replaced the M 104 in 1997. Until the introduction of the new M 256 in 2017, there was no in-line six-cylinder gasoline engine in the Daimler engine range.

The 3.0-liter version was initially not positively received by the motor press.

Although the engine runs extremely smoothly, it does not offer any noticeable additional power up to approx. 4,500 rpm compared to the 3.0-liter version of the M103.

It was initially available in the 300 E / TE / CE-24 and 300 SL-24 models with a displacement of 2960 cm³ and outputs between 162 and 170 kW. This variant was later discontinued and the engine was available from 1992 with 2.8 and 3.2 l and a camshaft adjustment (two-stage phase adjuster of the intake camshaft). These later versions were somewhat reduced in the liter output in order to get a more favorable torque curve. With 2.8 l the engine developed 142 or 145 kW, with 3.2 l 162 or 170 kW.

The picture in the info box shows the AMG version with a displacement of 3.6 liters and 206 kW (280 hp), which was available in the W 124 (E 36 AMG) and W 202 (C 36 AMG). The engine was fundamentally revised by hand at AMG. The larger displacement (stroke: 92.4 mm; bore 91 mm) enables higher torque over a wider engine speed range. The light and stable aluminum forged pistons are cooled by additional oil spray nozzles. The crankshaft is finely balanced, connecting rods and pistons are balanced and therefore paired. Decisive changes also affected the cylinder head: the camshaft was modified, the air ducts machined to optimize flow and sodium-cooled valves were installed. A modified engine management rounds off the package of measures.

By retrofitting a cold run controller , many M 104 can achieve the Euro 2 emissions standard , which roughly halves the vehicle tax in Germany .

Until recently, the South Korean SsangYong Motor Company manufactured the M-104 engines under license for their off-road vehicles.
