The M 256 is a gasoline engine developed by Mercedes-Benz that was introduced in 2017 as part of the facelift of the S-Class ( 222 series ). It is a six-cylinder in - line engine with exhaust gas turbocharging and an additional electric compressor . It is assembled in the Stuttgart-Untertürkheim engine plant .
The M 256 is the successor to the M 276 and part of a modular engine generation that includes 4 and 6-cylinder diesel engines as well as 4 and 6-cylinder petrol engines. A large number of identical parts is achieved thanks to the identical cylinder displacement (approx. 500 cm³) and spacing .
technology
Base engine
The displacement of the six-cylinder in - line engine is 2999 cm³ with a bore of 83 mm and a stroke of 92.4 mm, with a cylinder spacing of 90 mm. The compression ratio is 10.5.
The gas exchange is controlled via four valves per cylinder ( four-valve technology ) and two overhead camshafts driven by a timing chain .
The basic engine is extremely compact in terms of its cylinder spacing (90 mm) and the bore (83 mm) in the longitudinal direction. With a web thickness of just 7 mm, it can be seen that there is no provision for an expansion of the displacement, as was often done in previous series. This could only be achieved by increasing the stroke.
Charging and exhaust
The engine has an exhaust gas turbocharger and - depending on the engine variant - an electrically driven auxiliary compressor from BorgWarner , which improves the engine's responsiveness. The electric compressor accelerates to 70,000 revolutions per minute within 300 milliseconds, thus ensuring that the boost pressure builds up quickly.
A three-way catalytic converter is initially used behind the turbine of the turbocharger . A particle filter is also installed as standard in the underbody of the vehicle . This makes the M 256 one of the first gasoline engines with a particle filter.
Furthermore, an integrated charge air cooler is used for the first time, which is placed between the throttle valve and the intake manifold.
Ancillary units
The M 256 manages without a conventional belt drive to drive ancillary units , which shortens its installation length. Instead, the electric coolant pump and the electric air conditioning compressor are supplied from the new 48-V on-board network .
A central component of the new engine is the integrated starter generator (ISG), which takes on both the function of the generator and the starter . The ISG can support the engine with a maximum of 16 kW (22 PS) and 250 Nm torque ("boosting" from the 48 V battery), for example during kick-down, and also takes on other hybrid functions such as recuperation (recovery of part of the Kinetic energy when braking into the 48-V battery) or sailing . It also helps to operate the internal combustion engine in a favorable map area by shifting the load point . This means that every vehicle equipped with the M 256 becomes a mild hybrid .
