The M 254 is a gasoline engine under development by Mercedes-Benz . It is a four-cylinder in - line engine that is assembled in the Stuttgart-Untertürkheim engine plant .

The M 254 is the successor to the M 274 and part of a new, modular engine generation that will include 4 and 6-cylinder diesel engines as well as 3, 4 and 6-cylinder petrol engines . A high degree of blocking is achieved thanks to the identical cylinder capacity (approx. 500 cm³) and spacing .

The first use takes place in the facelift of the E Class.
