Working principle: Otto
Design: In-line engine , four-cylinder

Successor: none
Similar models: M 256

The M 260 / M 264 is a four-cylinder in - line engine from Mercedes-Benz .

The M 260 / M 264 is the successor to the M 270 / M 274 and part of a new, modular engine generation that will include 4- and 6-cylinder diesel engines as well as 4- and 6-cylinder petrol engines . A large number of identical parts is achieved thanks to the identical cylinder displacement (approx. 500 cm³) and spacing . A special technical feature of this engine (like its predecessor M 270 / M 274) is the possibility of transverse and longitudinal installation:

M 260
Installation across as a motor in models with driven front axle (front-wheel drive)
M 264
Installation lengthways as a motor in models with driven rear axle (rear-wheel drive)

technology

Base engine

The displacement of the four-cylinder in - line engine is 1991 cm³ with a bore of 83 mm and a stroke of 92 mm, with a cylinder spacing of 90 mm. The compression ratio is 10.5.

The gas exchange is controlled via four valves per cylinder ( four-valve technology ) and two overhead camshafts driven by a timing chain . On the intake side, both versions have the variable valve control CAMTRONIC .

Charging and exhaust

The engine has a TwinScroll - turbocharger with an electric wastegate actuator. The twin scroll charger combines the exhaust ducts of two cylinders each in a flow-optimized manifold.

A three-way catalytic converter is initially used behind the turbine of the turbocharger . A particle filter is also installed as standard in the underbody of the vehicle . This makes the M 260 / M 264 one of the first petrol engines with a particle filter.

Ancillary units

Similar to the new six-cylinder in-line petrol engine M 256 , the M 264 - but not the M 260 - has a 48-V electrical system , in addition to the existing 12-V electrical system. However, a belt-driven starter generator (RSG) is used here, which replaces the alternator and starter. This can briefly support the combustion engine with up to 10 kW (14 PS) in the speed range up to 2,500 rpm (boost function from the 48 V battery) and enables partial recuperation of the vehicle's kinetic energy in these 48 V batteries when braking. Accumulator. In addition, the combustion engine can be switched off while driving in order to sail without consuming fuel . So every vehicle equipped with the M 264 should actually become a mild hybrid . However, the C300 W205 MoPf shows that Mercedes also uses the M-264 variants that are built without a belt starter generator and without a 48 V battery, but with a classic starter and alternator.

The engine also has an electric coolant pump at 48 V level.
