The Mercedes-Benz W 152 , called type G5 , was an off-road vehicle that was built by Daimler-Benz from 1937 to 1941 for military and civil purposes. It was a further development of the unsuccessful 170 VL . In order to be able to expand the lucrative business of arming the Wehrmacht , the factory made this third attempt.

Its wheelbase has been increased again by 5 mm compared to its predecessor and is therefore 2530 mm. The front section with the vertical radiator grille has been slightly modernized. The car received the side-controlled four-cylinder in-line engine of the type 200 V with a displacement of 2006 cm³, compression of 6.5: 1 and an output of 45 hp (33 kW) at 3700 rpm. The engine develops a maximum torque of 125  Nm (12.8 mkp) at a speed of 1800 rpm. An unsynchronized five-speed gearbox transfers the power to all four wheels. The three limited slip differentials on both axles and in the cardan shaft were new . The all-wheel steering of the 170 VL type, whereby the steering for the rear axle can be switched off, was adopted. The rear wheels hang on a coil-sprung swing axle . The front axle now also got coil springs and double wishbones. All four wheels have hydraulic brakes.

The maximum speed in normal operation rose to 85 km / h; when all-wheel steering was used, it remained at 30 km / h. The car, which is over 600 kg heavier, only allows 270 kg payload instead of 500 kg as with its predecessors. During the tenth three-day low mountain range drive in 1938, a driver won a gold medal in the G5 .

The Heereswaffenamt again showed no interest and therefore Daimler-Benz decided to present the car to the public at the British International Motor Show in London's Earls Court Exhibition Center in October 1938 . In addition to the open Kübelwagen body, there was also a Kübelwagen with four simple doors and a hood for use by the police and similar authorities and a "colonial and hunting car" with four normal doors attached to the B-pillar, side windows and a lined, tropicalized one Hood.

378 units were sold in three years, almost all of them abroad.
