Premiere 2001

The new Axor series replaced the heavy series of the smaller Atego model (15- and 18-tonner) in summer 2001 . With tonnages from 18 to 26 tonnes, it covers the spectrum between the large Actros series and the Atego. In contrast to the Actros, the smaller Axor is not equipped with the V6 diesel OM 501 LA , but with the in-line six-cylinder OM 906 LA from the Atego. This is available with outputs between 170 and 205 kW (231–279 hp) or 850–1120 Nm, above which the OM 906 LA (then referred to as OM 926 LA), which has been enlarged to 7.2 liters, has an output of 240 kW (326 PS) and 1300 Nm. The largest variant of the R6 is the 12 liter OM 457 LA with 260 to 315 kW (354–428 hp) and 1850–2100 Nm.

Even at the start of series production, Mercedes-Benz offered the new series with the S, S extended, L (one bed) and L high roof (two beds) cab variants familiar from the Atego, as well as various wheelbases between 3150 mm and 6300 mm. These could be combined with different bodies such as tippers, semi-trailers and flatbed trucks. The types G42 / 5-5 with 5 gears, G60 / 6-6 and G85 / 6-6 with 6 gears each and a 12-speed gearbox (6-speed basic gearbox with splitting, one reverse gear) were from the Atego available.

First facelift (2004)

At the 2004 IAA Commercial Vehicles there was a facelift in which the headlights and the rest of the front were more closely aligned with the new Actros (since March 2003). The engines remained, but they could now be equipped with a new hydraulically operated gearbox called G131-9 (four-speed basic gearbox with split and crawler gear, as well as a reverse gear) or the likewise new G85-6 with Telligent automatic gearshift (one from the Actros technology adopted), which among other things also offers the Telligent brake and driving assistance control ( ABS , ASR , BAS, etc.) as well as other functions such as roll control.

In addition, as in the other two model series, Mercedes revised the entire cockpit, which from then on is more modern and car-like and is available in three different versions: as a distribution, long-distance and comfort variant, whereby all vehicles come with the distribution as standard. Cockpit are equipped. The distributor cockpit also has a narrow parapet to facilitate access to the front passenger seat and can be equipped with a center seat on request. The long-distance and comfort variants have a wide parapet with additional shelves, high-quality surfaces (comfort) or many shelves on the engine tunnel (long-distance transport). Another important innovation was the widened beds, which are now sufficiently wide at 64.5 cm (below) and 70 cm (above) and have a heavy-duty slatted frame for additional comfort.

For the 2006 model year, the Atego received Euro 4/5 engines that are combined with the BlueTec technology already familiar from the Actros . Some of the previous engines were further developed, and some new ones were added. The new engines in detail:

In 2011 the Axor received another facelift. The front of the vehicle has been redesigned, which is now more like the 3rd generation Actros.

Successor models 2012

With the changeover to EU VI, the Axor has two different successors. In heavy-duty distribution transport, the Mercedes-Benz Antos takes over , while the Mercedes-Benz Arocs is the solution especially for construction site traffic. The well-known Axor will continue to be available for EU III, IV and V applications.

Further areas of application

The Bundeswehr leads from the end of 2007 partially militarized vehicles one of this type to the existing truck 5 ton class ( Mercedes Benz 1017 to replace).

The technical relief organization uses vehicles of the type with Rosenbauer body as equipment vehicles 1 .
