The Mercedes-Benz M 279 is a gasoline engine with twelve cylinders in a V arrangement from Mercedes-Benz . The twelve-cylinder with biturbo charging was first introduced in 2012 in the SL of the R 231 series and in the G-Class (W 463) and replaced the M 275 . In contrast to all other current Mercedes-Benz gasoline engines, the M 279 does not have direct injection , but intake manifold injection .

The M 279 is based on the previous M 275 engine , but has been completely redesigned. New exhaust gas turbochargers with larger spiral cross-sections and flow-optimized wastegate ducts are being installed. In addition, a multi-spark ignition with twelve double ignition coils is used. The engine management and the cylinder heads have also been revised. In contrast to its predecessor, the M 275 , the M 279 is only available with a standard 6-liter displacement. A reduced-power version with 390 kW compared to the AMG variant is used in the S 600 L of the 222 series .
