In the following season Mai played 24 point games for the U17s in the B-Junioren-Bundesliga and scored one goal. In the 2016/17 season he played 22 games in the B-Junioren-Bundesliga and scored two goals; he was used again in a point game of the U19. At the end of the season, Mai won the German B-Junior Championship as team captain with the U17s . For his achievements he received the bronze Fritz Walter Medal in the U17 age group.

In the 2017/18 season, Mai finally moved up to the U19. On July 30, 2017, he played a game for the second team in the fourth-class regional league Bayern in a 2-2 away game against FC Unterföhring , but otherwise continued to play for the A-Jugend and became team captain over the course of the season .

First professional contract with FC Bayern

On April 21, 2018, Mai made his debut in a 3-0 away win at Hannover 96 in the Bundesliga , when coach Jupp Heynckes spared numerous regular players in the game that was rather insignificant for Bayern after the championship they had already won; Mai played as a central defender for over 90 minutes . He had previously participated in the winter training camp in Qatar with the professional team in January. Six days after this debut, he signed his first professional contract, valid until June 30, 2021. The following day, he also played for 90 minutes in the home game against Eintracht Frankfurt and sat on the bench in the Champions League semi-final second leg away from Real Madrid the following two last Bundesliga games of the season. Through his two appearances, Mai became German champion for the first time .

For the 2018/19 season , Mai moved up to the squad of the second team, but was not injured at the start of the match. After his recovery, he immediately became a regular player in central defense for the Bayern Amateurs, but also played several games in the A-Juniors Bundesliga and UEFA Youth League for the A-Juniors (U19) . Overall, May came in the second representation on 27 regional league appearances, in which he scored two goals. He also played in both games of the promotion round, in which one rose to the 3rd division . In the professional team, Mai sat on the bench in seven Bundesliga games without being substituted on by head coach Niko Kovač . He became German champion for the second time with the professionals and won the DFB Cup for the first time , as he sat on the bench in the quarter-finals without a stake.

Also in the 2019/20 season, Mai was in the extended squad of the first team and also played for the second division in the third division. Under Kovač and his successor Hansi Flick , he was in 15 Bundesliga games in the matchday squad and was German champion for the third time without use. In addition, Mai was in the squad for three DFB Cup games and won this competition without a stake. In the second team, the central defender under Sebastian Hoeneß played 26 third division games (25 times from the start) in which he scored a goal and was third division champion.
