The Rock of Guatapé ( Spanish El Peñón de Guatapé ), also Rock of El Peñol ( Spanish La Piedra de El Peñol ) or simply La Piedra or El Peñol, is a conspicuous island mountain (sometimes also referred to as " Monolith ") made of granite in Colombia . It is located in the municipality of Guatapé , Antioquia . The municipality of El Peñol bordering on Guatapé also lays claim to the rock. The rock is part of the Antioquia batholith .

history

The formation is around 70 million years old and is what remains of an erosion process , probably due to less fissure than the surrounding area.

The indigenous Tahamí , who prehistorically inhabited the region, worshiped the rock and called it Mojarrá or Mujará , which means "rock" or "stone".

In the 1940s, the mountain was declared a national monument by the Colombian government.

The rock was first officially climbed in July 1954 when Luis Villegas, Pedro Nel Ramirez and Ramón Díaz climbed the rock after a five-day undertaking with the help of sticks attached to the rock face.

A previously unknown plant species, Pitcairnia heterophylla , was found at the summit by a German scientist .

labeling

On the north side there is a capital "G" and an incomplete "U" in white. The cities of Guatapé and El Peñol have long been in dispute over their territorial claims. Guatapé residents began to emphasize their claim by wanting to paint the name of their city on the rock. After the residents of El Peñol noticed this, they stopped the work by a march. The work was finished in the state in which the letters can still be seen today.

properties

The rock rises on the edge of the reservoir of Peñol-Guatapé and consists of granite ( quartz , feldspar and mica ).

At the highest point (in the southwest) the mountain rises to 2135 m above sea level. NN and thus about 220 m above the foot of the rock. The average temperature here is 18 ° C. At the foot it is approx. 285 m and 110 m wide. The rock consists of an estimated 10 million tons of rock. There are several crevices in the rock, one of which was used to build the stairs.

Tourist development

The mountain can be climbed via a staircase on the north side with approx. 700 steps (the information varies between 650 and 740 steps). There are several food and market stalls for shopping at the foot of the rock. About halfway up the stairs is a shrine to the Virgin Mary.

There is a three-story observation tower on the summit, from which the view can extend up to 500 km.
