The Cordillera Central in Colombia is one of the three most important mountain ranges of volcanic origin in South America and a branch of the Andes Cordillera ( Spanish Cordillera de los Andes ) which stretches between the Western and Eastern Cordillera in southern Colombia . The Central Cordillera is the one with the highest elevations. Your mountains can reach up to 5000 m above sea level. The Central Cordillera (on average at 3,000 to 3,500 above sea level) extends over 1023 kilometers from the Colombian massif ( Macizo Colombiano in Spanish or also called Nudo de Almaguer ) in the Cauca department in the south to the Serranía de San Lucas in the Bolívar department in the north of the country. The mountain range covers an area of 129,737 square kilometers.
The so-called "Coffee Axis" ( Spanish Eje Cafetero ) with several snow-capped peaks, including the Nevado del Ruiz , Nevado de Santa Isabel , Nevado el Cisne and the Nevado del Tolima, is located on this mountain range .
On the mountain range and its valleys there are important cities of Colombia, such as Medellín , Popayán , Cali , Ibagué , Armenia , Manizales and Pereira . The Central Cordillera crosses the departments of Antioquia (26%), Tolima (15%), Bolívar (14%), Cauca (11%), Nariño (8%), Huila (7%), Valle del Cauca (6%), Caldas (5%), Putumayo (5%), Risaralda (2%) and Quindío (1%).
