It is in the nature of things that the height of glaciated volcanoes can change.
The summit area is covered with eternal snow due to its height. The area of the ice and snow cap in 2011 was 2.328 km².
With its regular cone shape, the Nevado del Tolima is a popular destination for alpinists . The normal route leads from the south side to the summit. A very early, proven ascent of the summit took place on January 2, 1940 by Horst Martin and Rudolf Meinhold .
