Rudolf Meinhold (born April 2, 1911 in Klosterlausnitz , † January 18, 1999 in Freiberg ) was a German geophysicist and petroleum geologist .

Life

Meinhold studied mining science in Jena and Berlin and graduated with Herrmann Reich on questions of reflection seismics for the exploration of structures in the underground. His first professional activity was under the direction of the Potsdam geophysicist Hans Haalck (1894–1969) exploring salt domes in the north German lowlands with the Haalck gravimeter .

At the suggestion of his mentor Haalck, he took advantage of the opportunity to carry out sea gravimetric measurements very early on. The measurements were taken off the Dutch coast in 1938, on Lake Maracaibo and in the Orinoco Delta in 1939. The work was carried out on behalf of the Bataafschen Matschappij ( Shell group). As a result of the outbreak of war in 1939 he had to break off his work and in 1940 came back to Berlin via San Francisco , Japan, Manchuria, Siberia and Moscow .

During the Second World War he led seismic survey teams on behalf of Prakla . In the 1950s, he built up the reflection seismic survey in the GDR and was then Chief Geologist of the oil industry of the GDR . During this time he dealt with the questions of the salt rise ( Halokinesis ). Furthermore, he was able to prove that the Pompeckj threshold is not a threshold in the structural sense. With that the limit of the oil prospect that was valid until then was lifted.

Increasing differences with the GDR leadership, particularly on the question of future flow rates of oil and gas (the East German leadership was interested in large deposits that could not be present) meant that he after the Wall went to the Freiberg changed and established the first international field of oil geology there and trained students, doctoral candidates and post-doctoral candidates. An appointment to professor came later because of the differences with the state and the party.

Since 1951 he has trained several generations of geophysicists and geologists as an external lecturer at the University of Leipzig and the Bergakademie Freiberg. He retired in 1976.

Rudolf Meinhold maintained personal contacts a. a. with Ludger Mintrop , Hans Haalck, Robert Lauterbach , Marshall Kay (USA), Otto Rosenbach , Gerhard Fanselau , Wolfgang Buchheim , Otto Meißer , Adolf Watznauer , Arno Hermann Müller .

On January 2, 1940, he and Horst Martin climbed the Nevado del Tolima (about 5200 m) in Colombia (probably the first ascent).
