Franz Wolfgang Buchheim (born October 18, 1909 in Leipzig , † January 2, 1995 in Freiberg ) was a German physicist and university professor.

Life

Buchheim studied mathematics and physics in Leipzig and at times also in Göttingen. In February 1935 he was at the University of Leipzig Dr. phil. PhD. He then worked as a research assistant at the University of Königsberg and from 1937 was a DFG scholarship holder for a little over a year at the I. Physics Institute of the Berlin University . From 1938 he worked as a geophysicist for the Society for Practical Deposit Research , in 1944 he worked as a theoretical physicist at the Berlin Reich Office for Soil Research .

In October 1945 Wolfgang Buchheim went to Freiberg. Until 1947 he worked for Otto Meißer at the Freiberg branch of the Soviet technical office "Buntmetalle". On September 1, 1946, he became a research assistant at the Institute for Applied Geophysics at the Bergakademie Freiberg . In May 1948 he completed his habilitation and a month later he became a lecturer in geophysics. In 1950 he was appointed full professor for theoretical physics and geophysics, in 1951 he became director of the institute. After the third university reform in the GDR in 1968, he was relieved of his position as director of the institute and appointed as deputy director of research in the newly established physics section. He held this office until 1972. He retired in 1975, although he continued to teach at the Bergakademie until the 1980s.

Wolfgang Buchheim died in Freiberg in 1995. His grave is on the Donatsfriedhof in Freiberg .

Memberships and honors

From 1960 he was a member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences and the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . In 1969 he was awarded the Badge of Honor of the Freiberg Mining Academy, and in 1994 he was awarded the Wilhelm Ostwald Medal.

On October 19, 2009, an honorary colloquium was held at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg on the occasion of his 100th birthday.
