The Dieren – Apeldoorn railway is a railway line in the Dutch province of Gelderland that runs from Dieren to Apeldoorn and is now a museum railway .

history

The railway line was laid out by Koninglijke Nederlandsche Locaalspoorweg-Maatschappij (KNLS) and opened on July 2, 1887. Together with the Apeldoorn – Zwolle railway , which was also built by Koninglijke Nederlandsche Locaalspoorweg-Maatschappij, this construction project was carried out as the main line at the request of the Ministerie van Oorlog (German Ministry of War ) . The aim was to ensure that in the event of an attack from the east, railway lines west of the IJssel could still be used.

The train service was operated by Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij . The railway line was used by both passenger and freight trains. In 1920 the Koninglijke Nederlandsche Locaalspoorweg-Maatschappij merged into the Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij, which in turn has formed the Nederlandse Spoorwegen since 1938 with the Staatsspoorwegen . On August 1, 1950, the Nederlandse Spoorwegen stopped passenger traffic. The last freight trains ran on the Loenen – Eerbeek section in 1964. Operations between Beekbergen and Loenen ended five years later, and the Apeldoorn VAM – Beekbergen section was closed in 1972.

Since 1975 the railway line has been operated by the Veluwsche Stoomtrein Maatschappij as a museum railway. Freight traffic between Dieren and Eerbeek was discontinued in 1984. The last freight trains are still running on the Apeldoorn – Apeldoorn VAM section. In 2012 there were plans for a rail link between Arnhem and Apeldoorn on the Dieren – Apeldoorn railway line. The Veluwsche Stoomtrein Maatschappij, the owner of the line, feared the end of their operations and contradicted the plan. The residents of Eerbeek and Lieren also protested against the plans. In February 2013 the province of Gelderland announced that the plans would not be implemented. The reason for this are the financial problems and the enormous time it takes to reactivate the railway line. Alternatively, one is thinking about a faster bus connection between Arnhem and Apeldoorn.
