The Arnhem – Leeuwarden railway line , also known as Staatslijn A , is a double-track, electrified main line between Arnhem ( Dutch: Arnhem ) and Leeuwarden in the Netherlands .

The railway line is the most important railway line in the north of the Netherlands. The route is about 166 kilometers. It connects the train stations Arnhem , Zutphen , Deventer , Zwolle and Leeuwarden with each other, in the section Zwolle-Meppel there are intercity trains from Schiphol to Groningen .

history

An InterCity near Zwolle

The first section of the line, between Arnhem and Zutphen, was opened on February 2, 1865. The section between Zutphen and Deventer followed on August 5th. The section between Deventer and Zwolle followed on October 1, 1866. Exactly one year later, the section to Meppel was opened to traffic. The penultimate section between Meppel and Heerenveen opened in January 1868. On September 1, 1868, the entire length of the line was open to traffic. The electrification took place on May 17, 1952 on the piece between Zwolle and Leeuwarden. The section between Arnhem and Zwolle followed a year later. The maximum speed on the route is 140 km / h. However, this is only achieved on the sections Zutphen-Deventer and Zwolle-Leeuwarden. Otherwise the route will mainly be driven at the maximum speed of 130 km / h. The line is generally double-tracked. The Deventer- Olst section, however, only runs on a single track.

Intercity trains are currently running on the route from Leeuwarden or Roosendaal to Zwolle and from Rotterdam via Utrecht to Leeuwarden. There are also some regional lines as well as regional and intercity trains in the Zwolle-Meppel section, which continue from Meppel in the direction of Groningen or which come from Amsterdam and Apeldoorn before Zwolle .
