The Arnhem – Nijmegen railway is a railway line between Arnhem and Nijmegen . The railway line is an important connection in the east of the Netherlands and runs over two estuary branches in the Rhine-Maas delta , the Nederrijn and the Waal . The length of the route is around 17 kilometers.

history

After the ten so-called " Staatslijnen " had been laid out by the Dutch state , the implementation of the Arnhem – Nijmegen railway line was specified in the law of May 21, 1873. On June 15, 1879, the route through the state spoor was opened. In Arnhem, the line connects to the Amsterdam – Arnhem , Arnhem – Leeuwarden and Oberhausen – Arnhem lines . The railway line between Cologne and Nijmegen was tied up during the construction of the railway line Arnhem-Nijmegen Nijmegen through the station to the Dutch railway network. The Tilburg – Nijmegen line was commissioned on June 4, 1881 , before the Nijmegen – Venlo line was inaugurated on June 1, 1883 . When the Elst – Dordrecht railway was opened in 1882, it was connected to both Arnhem and Nijmegen. Due to the growing car traffic in the 1930s, the Nederlandse Spoorwegen decided to modernize their routes. The so-called "Middennet" provided for the electrification of numerous railway lines in the Netherlands. The electrification of the line between Arnhem and Nijmegen was completed on April 2, 1940. Between 1980 and 2002 there was only the train station in Elst between Arnhem and Nijmegen . However, at the beginning of the 21st century, two more stops, Arnhem Zuid and Nijmegen Lent , were opened. Two connections to the Betuweroute , a freight railway line between Rotterdam and Zevenaar , which was completed in 2007 , were officially established in 2015 after a brief test phase.
