The Elst Station is a separation station in Elst , in the municipality of Overbetuwe in the Dutch province of Gelderland . Here the Elst – Dordrecht railway branches off from the Arnhem – Nijmegen railway .

history

The first train station in Elst was built from 1877 and went into operation on June 15, 1879 at the same time as the Arnhem – Nijmegen railway line opened. In 1882 the station was connected to the Elst – Dordrecht line ( Oostelijke Betuwelijn ) and has been the terminus ever since. The Arnhem – Nijmegen line was electrified in 1940. After the end of the Second World War , there was no connection to Geldermalsen for several years . until traffic was restarted in 1954 with a diesel train of the Blauwe Engel type ( German  "Blauer Engel" ). In 1981 the old station building was closed and replaced by a new building based on a unique design by the architect Cees Douma at the current location. As part of the Stadsregiorail program, a third track with a turning system was laid for the railway line in the direction of Dordrecht in 2014 . In a train accident on July 14, 2017, two 17-year-olds were killed when they tried to cross the tracks and were hit by an intercity train operated by the Nederlandse Spoorwegen . The train service between Arnhem and Nijmegen had to be temporarily suspended.
