The Ede-Wageningen Railway Station is the largest train station in the town of Ede and a central hub in the urban public transport. National regional and long-distance trains run at the station. Wageningen, which is also named, is about eight kilometers south of Ede.
history
The station was opened on May 16, 1845 with the Amsterdam – Arnhem railway line. The station was originally supposed to be built in the area of the municipality of Wageningen , but the route planning of the Rhijnspoorweg was changed so that the route ran over the area of the municipality of Ede. In 1937 the tram connection to Wageningen was shut down and replaced by a bus connection. The population of Wageningen was dissatisfied with this and therefore demanded that the name of the station also bear the addition "Wageningen". The station has had its current name since 1938, previously it was called Ede Staatsspoorwegen . The station received its current appearance in 1984.
future
The station is to be completely rebuilt in the coming years. The new train station will be a few meters east of the current location and will be an important public transport hub for the communities of Ede and Wageningen. To this end, the station area is to be rebuilt and connect two residential areas. According to the planning, travelers should mostly reach the station via the south side. The current number of shops can be doubled with the new building. In addition, a new bus station , a bicycle station with a capacity of 6000 bicycles, parking facilities for taxis and a P&R parking lot for drivers are to be built. The Spoorzone Ede project is planned by the municipality of Ede, the Nederlandse Spoorwegen and ProRail and is made possible by the Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat and the province of Gelderland . The new station is being designed by the architects Mecanoo and Movares .
