The Driebergen-Zeist station is a through station of the Dutch railway company NS on the territory of the Dutch municipality of Utrechtse Heuvelrug . The eponymous Zeist is about two kilometers north, Driebergen is also two kilometers away, but in a southerly direction.

history

On June 27, 1844, the Utrecht-Driebergen-Zeist section of the Amsterdam-Arnhem railway line was opened, which was commissioned by the Nederlandsche Rhijnspoorweg-Maatschappij. At first the station was only called "Driebergen". In 1864 the name was changed to "Driebergen-Zeist", but in 1904 it was changed back to "Driebergen". In 1948 the station was given the current name "Driebergen-Zeist" again. The central platform was built in 1854. In 1864 the station received a new station building. In 1962 the station was demolished and replaced by a new building. The signal box was demolished in 1971. In 2004, the platforms were lengthened to enable longer long-distance trains to stop in Driebergen-Zeist. Planning an expansion to four tracks is difficult, as the N225 runs directly next to the tracks on both sides of the station, so that in the event of an expansion, the road would have to be completely relocated on one side.

future

The Driebergen-Zeist train station has been extensively rebuilt since 2017 in order to counteract the traffic jam at the level crossing, overcrowded bicycle racks and a lack of parking spaces. The Hoofdstraat , which previously crossed the tracks as a level crossing, is to be underpassed by a tunnel and at the same time widened, while the level crossing of Odijkerweg is to be closed. In addition, the station square should be both around and below the tracks, which should avoid the dangerous crossing of the tracks. In addition, a new bus station and a bicycle station with space for 3000 bicycles are to be built. The number of tracks is also to be increased from two to four. Meanwhile, a parking garage with a capacity of 600 vehicles has been built. The project, which was commissioned by the municipalities of Utrechtse Heuvelrug and Zeist , the Nederlandse Spoorwegen , ProRail and the province of Utrecht , is largely financed by the Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat and carried out by the construction company BAM . The construction work should be completed in 2020.
