The Zandam station is a through station of the Dutch railway company NS in the Dutch town of Zaandam in the municipality Zaanstad .

history

The first station was opened in 1869 with the new section between Uitgeest and Zaandam, the Nieuwediep – Amsterdam line. The station got its present appearance in 1983 with the opening of the Hemtunnel , which replaced the old bridge over the North Sea Canal . The station consists of four tracks on two central platforms, which are connected by a tunnel.

location

The station is located in the western district of Zaandam of the municipality of Zaanstad . The Hemtunnel begins about 500 meters south of the station and takes the trains directly to Amsterdam Sloterdijk station .

The station during the renovation (2019)

Part of the MAAK.Zaanstad project is the renovation of the station area in Zaandam. A superstructure is to be built above the tracks, after which a transfer for pedestrians and cyclists, which is to connect the city center with the west side of the station, is to be set up. There should also be space for a few shops on the superstructure. In addition, a bicycle station with space for 1400 bicycles is to be built on the west side . The station concourse is to be given a new entrance and modernized. The project is being carried out on behalf of the municipality of Zaanstad , the Nederlandse Spoorwegen , ProRail and the Vervoerregio Amsterdam and should be completed by the end of 2019.
