history

A train from the SNG series on the Velim railway test ring

In 2014 the Nederlandse Spoorwegen placed an order with the Spanish manufacturer CAF for the delivery of 118 Civity trains. The order includes a capacity of 20,000 seats and is to be used for Sprinter trains in regional transport. The first train was tested on the CAF premises in Beasain . In March 2017, further test drives took place on the Velim railway test ring in the Czech Republic . The train has already covered 40,000 kilometers. Its resistance to winter conditions was then tested in a climatic chamber in Vienna . On September 14, 2017, the first train was transferred to the Netherlands and officially presented the following month in the workshop of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen in Amsterdam-West . The remaining vehicles were shipped to the port area of Rotterdam in the course of 2018 and then transported by trucks to the Zaanstraat workshop in Amsterdam-West. In August of the same year, the trains received their approval for use in passenger transport. This enabled the Nederlandse Spoorwegen to carry out test drives between Haarlem and Alkmaar , Amersfoort and Apeldoorn as well as Arnhem and Zwolle . On November 12, 2018, trial operation of the SNG series began in regular service on the route between Den Haag Centraal and Haarlem . With the start of the new annual timetable on December 9, 2018, the Sprinter Nieuwe Generatie officially began operating. In the same month the Nederlandse Spoorwegen announced the order for 88 more trains. These are to be used in traffic by 2023 and will gradually replace the SGM and DD-AR series.
