The train station of Assen is a through station in the town of Assen in the Dutch province of Drenthe . With 8,569 travelers daily, it is the busiest train station in the province of Drenthe. Both long-distance and regional trains of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen railway company stop at the station .

history

Construction of the first station building in Assen began in 1868. After the work had been completed, the station opened on May 1, 1870. On the same day, the Meppel – Groningen railway line was opened, which had been laid out by the Dutch state as one of the nine state lines . The station building was designed by Karel Hendrik van Brederode , an architect of the Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen railway company at the time , and was built according to the SS Hoogezand station type , a renewed version of the third standard class. The structure comprised a risalit in the middle of the building with bevelled corners and lower side wings. From June 15, 1905, Assen station was connected to the Gasselternijveen – Assen railway and formed its terminus . From then on, Assen was connected to Stadskanaal, Emmen and Zwolle via this route . On May 4, 1947, passenger traffic on the Gasselternijveen – Assen railway was stopped by the Nederlandse Spoorwegen, as there was a shortage of trains after the end of the Second World War . The vehicles available were mainly used on the primary railway lines, which meant that secondary lines were at a disadvantage. Buses operated on the section from December 15, 1950.

Station building from 1988

In April 1988 the new construction of the station building began according to a design by the architect Rob Steenhuis . On June 6, 1989, the new station building was officially put into operation. The striking building was controversial among the population and was nicknamed the Moskee ( German for  "mosque" ). It was composed of several components, a bicycle parking space, the entrance area, a restaurant and a customer center for bus passengers, the center of which was the cube-shaped, glass station hall. There were steel pillars at every corner, rounded off by a golden ball. In addition, the edges of the blue-colored roof had a rounded shape.

FlorijnAs

As part of the FlorijnAs urban development project , the station area in Assen has been completely renovated since 2017. The development program provides for an improvement of the infrastructure, which is considered necessary for the city to maintain its economic importance. Thus by 2020 the station area, the car connection and the traffic flow in the city are to be modernized. Then new apartments are to be built, green spaces developed and obsolete spaces repaired. The station building was demolished in March 2016. In the following month the construction of the 170 meter long Overcingel tunnel started . The subsidiary of the construction company Koninklijke BAM Groep , BAM Infra, carried out the construction work on the new road tunnel . A new station building was built from September of the same year. Architects De Zwarte Hond and Powerhouse Company were responsible for the design . In 2017 a new tunnel was created below the platform area. Construction work also took place in the track area. Here, tracks 4 and 5, which were no longer needed, were removed, while old points were replaced. In addition, a platform designed for intercity traffic was built on track 1 and the island platform on tracks 2 and 3 was expanded and equipped with wider stairs and a new elevator . In the meantime, a new entrance on the east side of the station and an underground bicycle station for around 2500 bicycles have been built. In addition, the Vredevelds tunnel for cyclists in the north of the station was set up with new asphalt and new railing and the gradient was lowered. In addition, the bus station was relocated a few meters and redesigned. The station building with its striking triangular roof structure and the pedestrian tunnel was on 14 May 2018 attended by Harmke Vlieg, a councilor of the municipality of Assen, Joost van der Bijl, a regional director of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen and Jan Mulder, a regional director of ProRail opened, . Assen station is served by Intercity and Sprinter passenger trains. Long-distance trains connect Assen with Groningen , The Hague , Rotterdam and Utrecht . In the intercity traffic there, multiple units of the DDZ and ICM series are used. The regional trains run between Groningen, Meppel and Zwolle . As so-called "Sprinter" trains, the new railcars of the NS series SNG have been running in trial operation between Groningen and Zwolle since March 16, 2019 . Since April 1, 2019, these have been in regular service. Previously, trains of the ICM series operated regional traffic, although they were originally designed for intercity traffic.

Freight transport

On the railway line between Meppel and Groningen, freight trains with goods from Onnen , Roodeschool and Veendam run to the Kijfhoek marshalling yard every day . In addition, freight trains regularly pass Assen station on their way from Zwolle via Onnen and Veendam to Stadskanaal . Until the closure of the Gasselternijveen – Assen railway on the Gieten – Assen section on November 4, 1968, this was used by freight trains whose route led from Zwolle via Assen to Stadskanaal.

At Assen train station there is a bicycle station manned by people and a large number of unguarded bicycle parking spaces. In addition, OV fiets can be borrowed there. An elevator and guidance systems for the blind should enable barrier-free access. Commuters can park their cars in a P + R parking lot . In the so-called Stationshuiskamer , passengers can spend their waiting time for seating and purchase goods that can be compared with the basic offer of a kiosk. These are equipped with passenger information systems , Wi-Fi and sockets for charging batteries. When the new train station in Assen opened in 2018, the Stationshuiskamer was the third of its kind in the province of Drenthe after the shops in Hoogeveen and Meppel .
