The Hemtunnel is an approx. 2.4 kilometer long railway tunnel in the Netherlands . It crosses under the North Sea Canal and connects the North Holland cities of Amsterdam and Zaandam . It replaces the Hembrug built in 1907. It opened in 1983 . The tunnel has three tracks and directly connects the Zaandam and Amsterdam Sloterdijk stations . The trains on the Nieuwediep – Amsterdam line run through the tunnel at regular intervals. With the opening of the tunnel, the train station in Zaandam was given a new look. Sloterdijk station was opened for the occasion.
