Cees Douma

Cees Douma (born October 13, 1933 in Delft ) is a Dutch architect. From 1960 to 1995 he was one of the most important architects of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) railway company . 370 train stations were built based on his designs.

Life and works

From 1950 to 1957 Douma studied supply engineering at the TU Delft . He then joined the building department in 1960 . Until 1975 he was responsible for a large number of small and medium-sized train stations. He designed 39 station buildings in the Netherlands.

He wrote a book about it: Het stationsgebouw van de Nederlandse Spoorwegen ("The station building of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen"), which has been reprinted twice. From 1975 he worked as an architect in charge of the department 'Gebouwen, Stedebouw en Vormgeving'.

Douma designed the Sextant train station . Sixteen stations of this type of building were built, but only seven of them existed in 2011.

In 1990 Douma was awarded the title Bouwmeester NS , which he wore until 1997 and was responsible for the corporate design ( Corporate Vormgeving ). The last station building he designed is that of Leerdam station (1987). In 1995 he retired . His successor was the architect Harry Reijnders.

Documents from him from 1968 to 1996 have been included in the archive of the city of Utrecht .
