Course of the Hoogeveense Vaart

The Hoogeveense Vaart (also Hoogeveensche Vaart ) is a canal in the Dutch province of Drenthe . The canal runs from Meppelerdiep near Meppel to the German border near Zwartemeer and is 65 kilometers long.

As early as 1627, the first excavations to create a canal between Hoogeveen and Echten began and were equipped with locks . This canal ultimately ran as far as Meppel , where it flowed into the Meppelerdiep . This should accelerate, simplify and make the transport of peat more efficient.

The next stage in the construction of the Hoogeveense Vaart began in 1852 when a company was founded with the aim of expanding the canal as far as the municipality of Emmen with a branch to Coevorden and a connection to the Beilervaart . However, these last two projects were not carried out by the company. Construction began that same year. In 1858 the section was completed as far as Emmen. In 1863 the border with the Kingdom of Hanover was reached. From Emmen the connection is called Stieltjeskanaal and from Coevorden the Coevorden-Piccardie Canal continues to the Left Ems Canal network .

As a result of the construction of the Hoogeveense Vaart, countless new settlements emerged in the moors of East Drento.
