Trail to Enkhuizen

The Leeuwarden - Stavoren railway line , also known as Zuidwesthoek-lijn , is a rail link between Leeuwarden and Stavoren . The line was built between 1883 and 1885 and, together with the Zaandam - Enkhuizen line and the Enkhuizen - Stavoren railway ferry, was intended to provide a direct connection between Amsterdam and Friesland . The line is single-track and not electrified .

history

The line went into operation on July 16, 1883 between Leeuwarden and Sneek , the Sneek - Stavoren section followed on November 28, 1885. The builder and operator of the 50-kilometer line was Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen (SS). The subsequent route from Enkhuizen to Zaandam belonged to the Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij (HIJSM), the ferry connection operated from 1886 was financed by this. In 1890 the HIJSM took over the management of the route, and in 1896 that of the ferry. From 1899, freight wagons were also hauled. Two more ferries followed by 1923. After the merger of HIJSM and SS to later become the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) from 1917 and the construction of the final dike in the 1930s, the route was only of regional importance. In 1936 the later NS stopped the ferry service across the IJsselmeer . To speed up the route, it also closed all stations between Leeuwarden and Workum with the exception of Sneek train station by 1938 .

After the Second World War , the Sneek - Stavoren section was one of the most unprofitable connections in the NS network. To avoid closure, the NS decided to reduce operating costs by most unneeded reception building simplified closed and the command. On June 3, 1973 the Sneek Nord station and the Mantgum station, which was closed in 1938, went back into operation. Three years later, the Exploitatie Nevenlijnen project group took up the task of examining the economic viability of the branch lines in the northern provinces. As a result of maintaining rail operations, the order for diesel multiple units of the DH series ( Wadloper ) was initiated and implemented. In 1985 the NS reopened the IJlst station, which is only a few hundred meters north of the station, which was abandoned in 1941 and whose building was demolished in 1954.

In 1999, NoordNed took over management of the route, and in 2003 the Arriva Group acquired the majority of the company. In 2005 the NoordNed brand disappeared.

passenger traffic

After the takeover by HIJSM, in addition to the Leeuwarden - Stavoren connection, there were also through trains via Enkhuizen to Amsterdam . Amplifiers also drove between Sneek and Leeuwarden. In the 1920s there were also occasional trains from Germany via Groningen to Stavoren with a connection to the ferry to Enkhuizen. After the Second World War there was an almost two-hour service between the two endpoints. During the rush hour this was compressed to an hourly cycle. The hourly service was later offered all day between Leeuwarden and Sneek and the offer was expanded with individual amplifiers. With the timetable change in 1970, there has been a continuous hourly service to Stavoren and additional trips between Leeuwarden and Sneek. After the Mantgum and Sneek Noord stops went into operation, the half-hourly service was introduced between Leeuwarden and Sneek. From May 1977 the amplifier trains were discontinued on Sundays. Since December 2010, Arriva has offered three hourly trips between Leeuwarden and Sneek, but the stop in Sneek Noord has been given a second platform track.

Vehicle use

Steam trains were used on the route until the 1950s, followed by operation with diesel multiple units of the DE1 series ( Blauwe Engel ). In 1983 the DH1 series ( Wadloper ) began to be used , which has been supported by the DM 90 series ( Buffel ) since the 1990s . Arriva has been using Stadler GTW diesel multiple units and Wadloper bought by NS since December 2007 .
