The village church

The former Catholic and, after the Reformation, Protestant church in Jorwert in Sluytermanwei 4 is consecrated to the former bishop St. Radbod . The pulpit dates from the 17th century, the organ is from 1799. One of the two bells was cast in 1394, the other in 1749. There is a sundial on the south wall. In 1951 the tower collapsed. In 1954 the church was rebuilt and the tower was renewed again in 2006.

Jorwert in literature

The Dutch historian Geert Mak wrote the book How God disappeared from Jorwerd (Dutch: Hoe God verdween uit Jorwerd ) about this village . The title comes from a scene in which the amalgamation of parishes is discussed. Its German subtitle suggests the tenor of the book: It describes the changes that the second half of the 20th century brought in this village. An agricultural commune becomes a string of houses whose residents "drive away to work elsewhere".
