Arno Hermann Müller (born August 25, 1916 in Erfurt , † April 11, 2004 in Freiberg ) was a German paleontologist and geologist .

Arno Hermann Müller, born in Erfurt in 1916 as the son of a forester , completed his studies in geology after a war-related break in 1948 with Hermann Schmidt at the University of Göttingen with a dissertation on "Stratonomic investigations in the Upper Muschelkalk of the Thuringian Basin" . After his habilitation in 1950, he received a lectureship in general geology, applied geology and paleontology in Greifswald in 1951 .

In 1952, Arno Hermann Müller accepted a call to the Haeckel professorship at the University of Jena , where, in addition to paleontology, he also taught general and historical geology and geophysics . In 1957 he took on a teaching position as a visiting professor at the Bergakademie Freiberg , before he was appointed professor of paleontology there in 1958, which he held until his retirement in 1981. Arno Hermann Müller died on April 11, 2004 at the age of 88 in Freiberg.

Müller received numerous honors. In 1965 he was admitted to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and in 1967 to the Academy of Sciences of the GDR , in 1989 he was made an honorary member of the Paleontological Society , in 1992 he was awarded the Cross of Merit First Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and in 2003 he was awarded the Honorary Senator title of the Freiberg Bergakademie.

Arno Hermann Müller carried out fundamental work on biostratinomy , for example on the history of the embedding and preservation of fossils , as well as on large-scale processes of phylogenetic development.
