Hermann Schmidt (geologist)
Hermann Schmidt (born November 3, 1892 in Elberfeld , † January 2, 1978 in Bad Godesberg ) was a German geologist and paleontologist .
After graduating from high school in 1911 (and interrupted from military service in World War I), Schmidt studied natural sciences and especially geology in Erlangen, Freiburg im Breisgau, Vienna and at the University of Göttingen , where he received his doctorate in 1920 under Hans Stille . He then spent two years at the Prussian State Geological Institute . From 1922 to 1961 he was curator of the geological-paleontological collection of the University of Göttingen with a teaching position for paleontology and later geology and stratigraphy as an adjunct professor from 1921. In 1954 he became an associate professor at the University of Göttingen, from 1955 as head of paleontology.
He dealt particularly with the stratigraphy of the Devonian and Lower Carbons, especially in the Rhenish Slate Mountains . He was also a leader in the chronology of the goniatites and a pioneer in paleoecology (bionomy), as in the facies classification according to the oxygen content of the marine habitats of that time.
In 1954 he received the Hans Stille Medal and in 1974 the Gustav Steinmann Medal . In 1957 he became an honorary member of the Paleontological Society . He was editor of the palaeontological journal for many years .
