Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology is a compilation published by the Paleontological Institute of the University of Kansas in Lawrence (Kansas) on the systematic paleontology of invertebrates . The first volumes appeared in 1953 and it has been continued ever since. The first editor was Raymond C. Moore .

It used to be co-edited by the Geological Society of America , and since 2008 only by the Paleontological Institute.

In 1944, a committee of the Paleontological Society headed by Benjamin F. Howell decided to initiate a compendium of paleontology of invertebrates, which should succeed the first volume of the Textbook of Paleontology by Karl Alfred von Zittel and Charles R. Eastman from 1913. They approached Raymond C. Moore. Moore was able to win the SEPM (of which he was co-founder), the Paleontological Society and the Palaeontographical Society in London for the project. The classification should follow the textbook Invertebrate Fossils by Moore, CG Lalicker and AG Fischer published in 1952 . To keep costs down, Moore approached the Geological Society of America to help finance the printing and illustration.

The first volume in 1953 was about bryozoans (Part G). Originally Moore's Treatise was only planned to be three volumes and around three thousand pages, later it grew to over 50 volumes. While it was initially still possible for individual authors to write entire individual volumes, it was later teams of specialists. In the course of time, the system was completely revised and cladistic and phylogenetic approaches and those from genome analysis were incorporated.

The publisher was Moore first, who in 1964 handed over the editorial work to Curt Teichert , but was still significantly involved in the publication until his death in 1974. In contrast to the earlier ones, the bindings published by Teichert were not blue, but multicolored. In 1978 Richard A. Robison succeeded Teichert, in 1986 Roger L. Kaesler and from 2007 Paul A. Selden . The transition to digital output was completed under Kaesler.

In July 2012, the Treatise had grown to 51 volumes with 20,150 pages, written by over 300 scientists. 53 volumes were published in 2018, all of which (including those that are out of print) are available on CD or DVD.
