William A. Berggren

William A. Berggren (born January 15, 1931 in New York City ) is an American geologist and paleontologist .

Berggren graduated from Dickinson College with a bachelor's degree in 1952 and the University of Houston with a master's degree in 1957. During this time, he worked as a micropalaeontologist for Shell from 1955 to 1957 . He received his PhD in geology from Stockholm University in 1960 . 1962 to 1965 he worked as a paleontologist for an oil company in Libya (Oasis Oil Company).

Since 1962 he worked at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution , where he is Senior Scientist Emeritus.

He studied foraminifera of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic , their evolution and global stratigraphic correlation. He was involved in the integration of various stratigraphies and dating methods for the chronostratigraphy of the Cenozoic era.

In 1982 he received the Mary Clark Thompson Medal and in 2000 the Raymond C. Moore Medal for Paleontology . He has been a member of the National Academy of Sciences since 1989 .

He was co-editor of the Journal of Paleontology .
